Edward Silva married Marion Barton

Edward son of John Josepha and Sarah Jane da Silva and grandson of Bruno da Silva was born
at London in 1841. He was of Portuguese descent and joined the family business which had
just merged with Cosens, when he was 21. In 1877 Silva & Cosens merged with another
leading Port company, Dow & Co. They traded from 14 Water Lane London and Oporto. He was
a regular traveller between the UK and Ireland in the 1860’s & 70 ‘s. Robinsons of Foster place
were one of their Irish agents as were Findlaters. He bought Testcombe House in Chilbolton in
1884. Edward died 23 May 1899 aged 58 and left 147k in personal estate, this was later resworn
at 157K. Testcombe House was left to his wife for her lifetime with remainder to his daughter.
Marion died 23 Apr 1925 in London.
1 Marion Grace (May) Silva only child born 1876 married Coningsby Ralph Disraeli, MP for
the Altrincham Division of Cheshire on 2 Mar 1897 at St Margaret’s Church, Westminster.
The wedding was a well reported society event. Coningsby was the son of Ralph Disraeli
and nephew of the British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli. Coningsby attained the
rank of Major in the Royal Bucks Hussars and served in WW1 and inherited Hughenden
Manor, High Wycombe from his uncle the ex-prime minister and Earl of Beconsfield in
1881. May was awarded an OBE as Lady of Grace of St John of Jerusalem. Coningsby
died at a nursing home in Hove on 30 Sep 1936. Marion died 6 Apr 1963 (aged 87) and
was buried at St Michael and All Angels Churchyard, Hughenden, Wycombe.
