William Sides born circa 1815 in Queen's County son of John Sides a farmer joined the
Royal Irish Constabulary. He married Isabella Kerr on 23 Apr 1847 at Dundalk
Presbyterian Meetinghouse. Isabella resident at Culfour was the daughter of Archibald
Kerr, a farmer. William was an RIC pensioner by 1875. Isabella died 28 May 1903 at Kells.
William Sides died 25 Nov 1907 at The Carrick, Kells. His son N Sides, resident at The
Carrick, Kells, the informant.
1 John Robert Sides born circa 1851 in Co Sligo was school master at Stillorgan
Parochial School from 1871 until 1883. He married Margaret Cloney on 6 Aug 1875
at St Anne’s Church, Dublin. Margaret born in Dublin circa 1843 was the daughter
of John Cloney and Margaret Knox and was a teacher at Stillorgan school from 1868.
John and Margaret lived at Church Cottage, Stillorgan. John graduated Trinity College,
Dublin BA and later received an MA. He was ordained priest and curate assistant of
Glenavy in 1889. He was appointed rector of Cogherney in 1891. On leaving Glenavy
he was presented with a purse of sovereigns and a silver communion service.
John was the Rector of Donaghmore living at the Glebe from 1901 to 1911 and all
four of their children had survived. Their niece Amy Margaret Smith (Daughter of
John Smith and Elizabeth Cloney) lived with them. He was rural dean of Agaloo from
1910 and a Canon of Armagh Cathedral from 1917. Margaret died 5 Jan 1927 at The
Rectory, Castlecaufield on 5 Jan 1927. She was buried at Castlecaulfield. John retired
in 1928 and died 18 Mar 1937 at his residence Athelford, Ballycastle. Probate to
Isabel Margaret Sides, spinster. In 1939 the Sides family presented gifts of a baptismal
ewer and cover in memory of their father and mother to Castlecaulfield Parish Church.
1 Richard William Sides born 18 Mar 1876 at Stillorgan baptised at Stillorgan
Church. He took holy orders and was ordained in 1899. He was curate in charge
of Tydavnet, Co Monaghan. He married Isabel Jane Hunter on 22 Apr 1914 at
Belfast and was appointed incumbent of Drumakilly the same year. He retired
to Galwally Park, Belfast in 1938. Richard died 9 Oct 1943.
1 Kathleen Sides only child born 22 Feb 1917 at Drumakilly, Omagh was a
medical doctor and medical officer to the Ely dispensary district. She
married Mervyn Harkness in 1948.
2 John Robert Sides born 22 Jul 1877 at Stillorgan took Holy Orders and was
ordained as curate of Christ Church, Derry in 1900, curate of Derry Cathedral
in 1902. He married Hilda Morris on 1 Jun 1904 at Clanabogan Church, Co
Tyrone. He was rector of Burt and Inca in 1905. He was a rural dean and
rector of All Saints, Burt in 1921. The couple had one son and three
daughters. Hilda died 5 Apr 1929 at Dr Steven’s Hospital, Dublin aged 57. John
died at the rectory, Newtowncunningham in March 1933.
1 Jane Sides born 7 Jan 1909 in Londonderry.
3 Nathaniel St George Sides born 14 Apr 1879 in Stillorgan baptised at
Stillorgan Church. He was educated at Dungannon Royal School and Trinity
College Dublin graduating MA. He took Holy orders and married Sylvia
Margaret Victoria Coote on 30 Jun 1915 at Armagh Cathedral. He was rector
of Termonmaguirke (diocese of Armagh) from 1916 until 1938 when he was
appointed rector of Sixmilecross and Dunmoyle. Sylvia was the daughter of
Captain Albert Augustus Eyre Coote and his wife Mary Emilie. Sylvia died on
19 Apr 1917 at The Rectory Castlecaulfield, Co Tyrone. No issue found. Nathaniel
secondly married Olive Margaret Silk at Hampstead in 1930. They had four sons
and one daughter.
4 Isabella Margaret Sides born 8 Jul 1880 in Stillorgan baptised at Stillorgan
Church. She worked as a VAD during WW1 and was based at Manchester
Military Hospital. She was unmarried in 1937.
2 Isabella Sides born circa 1860 in Co Sligo was a teacher living in Kells in 1901 and a
school mistress by 1911. Isabella died unmarried on 2 Dec 1917 at The Carrick, Kells.
3 Nathaniel Sides born circa 1863 in Co Sligo was a national school teacher living in Kells
in 1901. Nathaniel died a bachelor on 4 Apr 1920 at The Rectory, Castlecaulfield, the
home of his brother John.
