James Guthrie Shiell born 1874 eldest son of John Shiell & Katherine (Sheila) Gutherie of Cairney,
Cupar Fife. He was educated at Ardvreck, Crieff and Rugby, he graduated from Oxford with a BA.
He was a member of the Speculative Society and acted as their librarian. He served an
apprenticeship with James Smith Clark while attending law at Edinburgh. His father John was a
solicitor and factor to the Dalhousie Estate. He was honorary Sheriff-substitute for Forfarshire
and died in 1895 and his mother died in 1898. He took over the practice of Messrs Shiell & Small
of Dundee which his father had founded in 1832. He was appointed Clerk to the Dundee
Heritors in 1907. He married Maude Isabell Campbell circa September 1920 at Kensington.
Shiell and Small acted as Treasurers to the University College Dundee and the Technical Institute,
served as Clerks for the Baxter Park Trust and were factors for the Dalhousie, Rossie Priory and
Baldovan estates. They were well known for representing both major businesses and landed
families in the Dundee area. Shiell and Small ceased trading in 1990, when it was acquired by
Miller Sneddon solicitors of Perth and Newburgh, which later merged with Hendry and Fenton
solicitors of Dundee, to form Miller Hendry solicitors of Dundee, Perth and Newbrugh. James'
mother was born in the Straits settlements, his brothers Alexander G, William G & John Anthony
stayed in Dundee. His sister Helen Scott married Rev Samuel Macaulay, parish minister of
Tealing. James died 4 Jun 1927 at Cairney, Cupar Fife and was buried at Western Cemetery. He
left 52K in personal estate.
Maude born 1900 in Abbeyleix was the only daughter of Colin Campbell of Tenby, South Wales
and his wife Maude Mabel Allen. Colin Campbell was a land owner in Republic of Uruguay South
America and a land agent living in Abbeyleix in 1901 and Greystones in 1911. He was living in
Sandown in the Isle of Wight in 1927. She was the granddaughter of the late Colonel Campbell of
the 7th dragoons and the great granddaughter of the late James Watson of Inchyra House in
Perthshire. Maude lived in Ireland until 1911. They were very sociable and attended the Hunt
Balls in Fife and Perth each year after they were married. Maude returned to Ireland after the
death of her husband and lived at Hazelwood from 1947 to 1955. Maude died 19 Oct 1988 late
of Orchard Court, Ballinclea Road Killiney. She left 260K in personal estate in England & Wales &
353K in Ireland.
