Sherlock Family of Stillorgan Castle
Thomas Sherlock, a Dublin merchant married Isabella Ball daughter of the late John Ball of
Eccles Street circa 1808. They were the parents of David Sherlock (1814 - 1884) and lived at
Laurel Lodge, Dundrum.

David Sherlock, son of Thomas and Isabella attended Clongowes College and graduated Trinity.
He was called to the Irish Bar in 1837 and married Elizabeth Therry youngest daughter of John
Therry late commissioner of the Board of Excise in 1843. He was appointed the Third Sergeant
at Law and Queen's Counsel. He was first elected MP for King's County in 1868 as a liberal
politician. He was on the Counsel of National Education, resigning in 1869 due to being elected
MP. He stood successfully as a Home Rule candidate in 1874. A member of the Dublin
Women's Suffrage Association (DWSA) he was also a member of the Statistical Society. He
lived at Mountjoy Place before moving to 15 Harcourt Street circa 1860, his country seat was
Stillorgan Castle which was described as one of the prettiest seats in County Dublin. David put
the estate up For Sale in 1875 but it was November 1882 before the Brothers of St John of God
from St Patrick's House, Sandymount moved to Stillorgan Castle.
1 Thomas Thierri Sherlock eldest son born circa 1844 married Letitia Connolly widow of
Richard James Connolly of Green Park and daughter of Sir John Nugent, Bart, of
Ballinlough Castle, Clonmellon and Letitia Maria Roche on 17.02.1873. Thomas died on
05.03.1905 aged 55 years at 20 Upper Mount Street and Letitia died on 25.02.1918 aged
73 years at Mount View, Dundrum.
1 David Thomas Joseph Sherlock KC born 06.09.1881 at 15 Harcourt Street
attended Downside College, Graduated Trinity, and was called to the Bar.
He practiced on the Munster circuit and married Augusta Anna Cruise
daughter of Sir Francis Cruise MD DL of Dublin on 26.07.1905 at St
Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church. He was a captain in The Royal Irish
Regiment in WW1 and was made MBE. He became Chief Justice of British
North Borneo in 1935 and was Chief Justice of Jamica in 1943. Augusta
died on 15.10.1961 at Balreask and David died on 12.10.1964 at
Hampstead, Glasnevin late of Balreask, Carlanstown, Kells, Meath.

2 Mary Margaret Helena Sherlock baptised on 22.04.1845 at the Pro Cathedral and died
unmarried on 03.02.1924 aged 78 years at 15 Harcourt Street.
3 David John Joseph Sherlock on baptised on 09.07.1846 at the Pro Cathedral.
4 Charles John Thomas Sherlock baptised on 06.07.1847 at the Pro Cathedral. Infant son
died on 23.07.1847 at 7 Mountjoy Place.
5 Thomas David Sherlock baptised on 03.04.1849 at the Pro Cathedral.
6 David Joseph Sherlock, junior baptised on 30.03.1850 at the Pro Cathedral. David 2nd
son of David Sherlock of Stillorgan Castle admitted to the Bar in 1872 married Mary
(Zeena) Elizabeth Murphy daughter of Edward Murphy of Merrion Square on 12.05.1873
at St Andrew’s Church. David died on 14.01.1940 aged 89 years at Rahan Lodge.

Leeson Street.
2 Captain Gerard Lourdes Edward Sherlock 2nd son born 13.12.1883 at 71
Lower Leeson Street. Gerard of the 3rd Kings Own Hussars was killed in
action on 25.08.1914 in Togoland, South Africa.
3 Major Edward Mary Sherlock born 08.05.1885 at 71 Lower Leeson Street.
Edward died on 03.05.1953 after a short illness in Dublin.
7 John Joseph Sherlock baptised on 25.10.1851 at the Pro Cathedral.
8 Charles Eustace Sherlock born on 13.04.1854 and baptised on 28.04.1854 at the Pro
Cathedral. Charles married Eliza (Elsie). In 1891 the family lived at the White Swan
Inn, Hampshire. Charles died on 19.02.1915 late of Bennett Road, Bournemouth.

eldest son of George Ryan of Inch House, Tipperary on 18.08.1874 at St Kevin’s Church,
Dublin. Elizabeth (Lily) died on 12.05.1878 at Inch House.
1 Mary Elizabeth Josephine Ryan born 26.06.1875 at 15 Harcourt Street.
2 Lilian Ryan youngest daughter born 18.09.1876 died on 05.05.1878 of whooping
cough aged 1 year and 3 months at Inch House.
