John Shaw Smith of Rostrevor son of John Smith and Mary Richardson was a photographer who
travelled from Italy to the Holy Land from 1850 to 1852. Diaries and photographs from this trip
are held by the Edinburgh University Library (Special Collections) and two albums of his work are
held at The National Library of Ireland. He resided at Fairy Hill in Newtownpark from 1855 to 1864.
He was a founder member of the Dublin Photographic Society (later The Photographic Society of
Ireland). In 1854 John Shaw Smith of Rostrevor, county Down, bought the Clonmult estate in Cork for
use as a sporting estate for 10K from the Commissioners for the sale of Encumbered Estates. He
was elected a member of the RDS in 1856 and was also a member of the Royal St George Yacht Club.
John died by his own hand at his residence in Fitzwilliam Square on 29.02.1873. Mary Louisa
died at Wesley Lodge, Ealing on 31.05.1892.
1 John Augustus Smith born circa 1840 married Anne Ricardstown eldest daughter of
Jonathan Joseph Richardson of Kircassock, Lurgan, Down on 14.09.1870 at St Stephen’s
Church. Witnesses: Mary Richardson and Florence Smith. John Augustus Smith of Clonmult,
Cork, owned 1,990 acres in Co Cork in the 1870's. John died on 03.01.1892 aged 51 years at
Brookwood Asylum near London. Anne died 15.02.1912 late of Sion Lodge, Waterford.
1 Joseph Louis Shaw Smith born 07.08.1871 at Kircassock. Louis of the Inland Revenue,
Somerset House married Helena (Leila) Mary Nason elder daughter of George Saul
Nason of Sandy Hill, Tallow, Waterford on 08.06.1897 at Curriglass Church, Cork.
Witnesses: Ann Smith and Major J S de Barres.
2 Annie Cyril Josephine Louise Smith married Hugh Adolphus Carter of Foxley, Burnham
son of late Rev William Adolphus Carter, Fellow of Eton College on 26.04.1904 at the
Abbey Church, Waterford. The marriage was performed by Rev J H Leslie brother-in-
law of the bride. Witnesses: Annie Smith, Louis Smith and Frank Carter.
3 Mary Richardson Smith 2nd daughter born 30.05.1875 at Kings Court, Tramore. Mary
married Rev John Herbert Leslie son of James Leslie on 01.06.1898 at the Abbey Church,
Waterford. Witnesses: Charles S Garraway and Anne Smith. They lived at Cahir in Co
Tipperary. John was Rector of Clonmel from 1910 to 1930, Canon of St Patrick's
Cathedral, Dublin from 1910 to 1934 and later Dean of Lismore. He died 13.08.1934 and
was buried at St Carthage's Cathedral, Lismore, Co Waterford. Mary died at Innislonagh,
Greenfield Park, Stillorgan on 0.06.1957.
1 Mary Isabel Leslie born 19.04.1899 at Portobello House. She was educated at
Sherborne School for Girls in Dorset, and graduated from Trinity College Dublin.
She was an Irish nationalist and author of over 30 novels. She used the
pseudonyms Temple Lane and Jean Herbert.
2 Jean Annette (Annette) Leslie born 28.02.1903 at Portobello House was a school
teacher and taught at Alexandra College, Dublin where she was head of the
Students’ Training Department and Kindergarten. She lived at Greenfield Park,
Stillorgan Road with her mother and sister and went missing on the 06.11.1936.
Her car a 'baby' Austin was found abandoned in Orwell road, Rathgar. Some weeks
later her body was found in the River Dodder, Dublin.
4 Helen Isabel Bertha Smith youngest daughter married Arthur Stanley Megaw youngest
son of late Robert Megaw of the Prairie, Hollywood, Down on 09.09.1905 at the Abbey
Church, Waterford.
2 Mary Henrietta Florence Smith born circa 1844 married Col Thomas Burton Vandeleur of
the 7th Royal Fusiliers eldest son of Rev William Vandeleur, Vicar of Julianstown on 15.09.1875 at
the Abbey Church in the Parish of Kilculliheen, Waterford. Witnesses: Boyle Vandeleur and
Augustus Smith. Thomas died of wounds on 16.08.1880 at Candahar, Afghanistan. Mary died
on 19.12.1893 late of 6 Oxford Terrace, Hyde Park, London.
