John Scally & Co were trading at 36 and 37 Lower Ormond Quay in 1868.
Thomas Scally a Wine Merchant of Lower Ormond Quay married Margaret Asken eldest daughter of
Francis Asken of Old Trafford, Manchester and Leinster Road, Rathmines. In 1871 he was trading
from Temple Lane by 1877 they had premises at Eustace Street and Swan & Crown was the whiskey
they sold. They lived at Deepwell, Blackrock from 1884 to 1897.

1 Mary Rose Winifred Scally eldest daughter born 27.02.1870 at 93 Lower Gardiner Street
studied at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Arts. Mary of Barn Hill, Sutton married John
Robert O’Connell Solicitor only son of Thomas Francis O’Connell on 05.06.1901 at the Church of
St Peter and Paul in Baldoyle. Witnesses Wm J Sugrue and May H Seery. John was knighted in
1914. Lady Mary died on 17.02.1925 aged 54 years at Ard Einen, Killiney and is buried at
Glasnevin. Following her death Sir John sold Ard Einen, retired from practice and entered the
Benedictine Monastery at Downside. He was ordained a priest in 1929 and was made a knight
grand cross of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre by Pope Pius XI. Sir John died on 28.12.1943 at
Brockenhurst, Hampshire and is buried at Glasnevin.
2 Ethel Josephine Scally born 02.06.1873 at 40 Morehampton Road. When she was 18, she
patented “An improved air-tyre for cycle and such like wheels.” Ethel studied at the Dublin
Metropolitan School of Arts and was involved in the design of gold, and black vestments
for the Honan Chapel at University College, Cork. Ethel died unmarried on 28.07.1915 aged
39 years at Ard Einen, Killiney and is buried at Glasnevin.

4 Gerald J Scally born 01.12.1878 at 3 New Brighton, Monkstown. Gerald of Shanet, Howth
married Caroline Mary Stein 2nd daughter of late Robert Stein a Maltser of Woodview,
Blackrock on 29.12.1914 at Booterstown Roman Catholic Church. Caroline was an artist and
had studied at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Arts. William Orpen was her tutor and Sean
Keating a contemporary. She exhibited at the Irish Exhibition of Living Art in 1943 and showed
with the Royal Hibernian Academy and Watercolour Society of Ireland. The had at least five
children including twin girls.
