Russell of Lucerne, Stillorgan
John Russell, born circa 1852 in County Down, son of John Russell, a farmer of Ballynafern, Co Down.
He worked at Todd, Burnes and Co and opened his own business at 39 Mary Street in 1877 as a
ladies tailor and outfitter. He married Margaret (Maggie) Coffey on 31 Aug 1875 at Kilkeel, Co Down,
and Margaret managed the dress making side of the business until her death on 2 Feb 1884 from
puerperal sepsis. He had a second shop at 85 Rathmines Road from 1902 and was a member of
Rathmines and Rathgar Urban District Council. He was appointed a JP and was chairman of the
Rathmines UDC by 1915. He retired in 1923 and sold the business to Martin C Rahill. He moved to
Lucerne, Stillorgan Park and died 2 May 1933 aged 81 and left 7K in personal estate. He was a
member of the Abbey Presbyterian Church, Rutland Square Dublin.
1 John A Russell born 16 Jul 1876 at 6 Synnott Place qualified as a veterinary surgeon and
joined the army. He was in South Africa in 1900 and was transferred to India and returned in
ill health to Dublin in 1905. He died at 85 Newington Terrace on 27 Feb 1908 and was
buried at Mount Jerome.
2 Janette May Russell born 6 Synnott Place on 12 Aug 1877 a drapers assistant in 1901. She
married Wilfred Walter Weston by special marriage license granted by the Presbyterian Church
on 10 Jun 1905 at 85 Newington Terrace, Rathmines. Wilfred was an insurance inspector and
they were living at Fitzwilliam Terrace, Rathmines in 1911.
3 Ada Ida Russell born 14 Jan 1879 died 3 Feb 1879 at 39 Mary’s Street.
4 Henry James Herbert Russell born Dublin 17 Feb 1880, an assistant draper living with his father
in 1911. He died a bachelor on 9 Mar 1913 at 85 Rathmines Road.
5 Edwin Arthur Russell born 3 Jun 1881 at 39 Mar’s street, a draper assistant in 1901. He married
Beatrice Amy (Tot) Bowker second daughter of Charles E Bowker, formerly of Moss side,
Brighton Square, Rathgar and now of Victoria House, Bexhill on Sea, Sussex on 5 Sep 1910 at
Bexhill. They were living at York Road Rathmines in 1911 and Edwin was a drug clerk.
6 Norman John Russell youngest son born 23 Dec 1883 at 39 Mary’s Street was a bookkeeper
living with his father in 1911. He enlisted in 1915 and attained the rank of Captain in the Royal
Army Service Corps. He married Florence (Florrie) Marion Robinson at the Presbyterian Abbey
on Rutland Square (Findlater's Church) on 25 Feb 1920. Florence was resident at Wansdale,
Terenure and the daughter of William Robinson, a merchant. They went to India after they
married and on their return around 1925 they lived with Norman’s father, John Russell, who
on his retirement had bought Lucerne from Florence’s eldest brother Norman Robinson.
Norman died 29 May 1960 at Brighton Road nursing home, late of Rathdown Crescent,
Terenure.*
