William Ridgeway born circa 1766 eldest son of William Ridgeway, a cabinet maker of Bride Street
and Dorothy Tandy graduated Trinity and was called to the bar in 1790 shortly after his father died.
He married Catherine Ledwich on 24 Aug 1799 (ML). Catherine was the daughter of the Rev Dr
Edward Ledwich and his wife Frances Phillips of York Street. Her sister Frances married Thomas
Tyrrell, a barrister resident at Clayton in 1808.
William was a crown counsel in state prosecutions including the trial of Robert Emmet in 1803. He
published the law reports on court cases including those of William Jackson in 1795 and the
Sheares brothers in 1798. He was surrogate Judge in the Court of Admiralty and Churchwarden of
Taney from 1810 and was part of the committee for the building of a new Taney Church in 1815.
Their townhouse was 40 Harcourt Street and they lived at Runnymead, Ballawley from 1809 to
1817. William died at Harcourt Street from typhus caught at the trial of Roger O’Connor at Trim
Courthouse on 27 Aug 1817. He was buried at St Peter’s and was survived by his widow and seven
children. His eldest sister Miss Martha died on 15 Jul 1839 aged 82.
1 Frances Ridgeway eldest daughter born circa 1800 married James W McAuley of
Chapelizod on 2 Jan 1821 at St Peters and they lived at Lis-a-lea and Dawson Court,
Blackrock for a time.
2 William Ridgeway died at Harcourt Street on 24 Jun 1802 and was buried at St Peter’s.
3 William Ridgeway eldest son born circa 1803 married Mary Anne Murphy of Aungier
Street at St Peter’s Church on 7 Oct 1833 and they lived at Runnymede. He drowned on
his passage to London aboard the Thames Steamer on 4 Jan 1841 which sunk off the
Scilly Isles. Mary Anne died after a fall in her home at 12 Watling Street on 26 Dec 1880.
1 Catherine Anne (Kate) Ridgeway only daughter born 4 Aug 1838 at Ushers Island
baptised at St Audeon's R C Church on 30 August 1838 died a spinster on
4 Sep 1867 at Richmond Street.
2 William Ridgeway only son born 3 Jan 1841 baptised at St Andrews RC Church in
1841 died 25 Apr 1870 at his residence on the NCR.
4 Elizabeth Ridgeway died at Harcourt Street on 20 Dec 1808 and was buried at St Peter’s.
5 Catherine Anne Ridgeway
6 Sarah Maria Ridgeway, third daughter married Richard Alexander Pope of Waterford at
Drumcondra Church in February 1834. Richard, a solicitor died in 1838 and Sarah
secondly married John Roe Steele on 27 Sep 1841 at Ballinakill Church. John was the
second son of Robert Steele of Mount Oliver. John a farmer of Crookville & Knockroe,
Co Waterford was bankrupt in 1864 and the family went to New Zealand.
7 Edward Ridgeway was resident at Hodgestown, Co Kildare and married Frances Tyrrell
on 1 Aug 1843 at Carberry Church. Frances was the eldest daughter of Thomas Tyrrell.
8 Joseph Ridgeway born circa 1813.
9 Martha Emma Ridgeway, fourth daughter born circa 1817 married Samuel Sale in August
1838 at St James’ Church. Samuel was the son of Samuel and Dorothea Sale. Samuel was
dead by 1868 and Martha died 29 Jan 1891 at Coolcor.
1 Angelina Sale only daughter born 7 Sep 1840 married Thomas Ledwich Tyrrell on
19 Dec 1870 at St Mary’s Church, Dublin. Thomas was the son of Thomas Tyrrell,
a barrister of Clayton, Co Kildare.
1 Thomas William Tyrrell born 19 Sep 1871 at Clayton, Co Kildare.
2 Francis Edward Tyrrell born 10 Feb 1871 at Clayton, Co Kildare.
2 Samuel William Sale eldest son born circa 1842 died 15 Oct 1891 at Coolcor,
Carberry.
3 Gregory Sale second son born circa 1845 was a Licentiate of the Royal College of
Surgeons in 1868. He married Adelaide Frances L’Strange on 28 Apr 1880 at St
George’s Parish Church. Angela was the daughter of Rev Guy P L’Strange. They
lived at Newtown Park, Naas and Gregory was a pro bono medical attendant to
Carogh Orphanage and also medical officer to the Irish Constabulary. Gregory died
21 Aug 1892 at Newtownpark House. Adelaide died in Manchester in 1930.
1 Adelaide Constance Sale born 2 Mar 1881 at Harcourt Street married James
Adams in 1921.
4 Thomas Ridgeway Sale born circa 1846 was a farmer died a bachelor at Coolcor,
Co Kildare. He left 11K in personal estate.
