James Reside born circa 1805 in Scotland. He moved to Dublin and married Susannah
Maddison in 1837. He worked for Comyns & Carr & Co, drapers. He was in partnership
with Bisgood, Jones and Wilson trading as James Reside and Co at 20-21 College Green
until 1862 and traded solo after that. They lived at Dunstaffnagh from 1854 to 1858 and
moved to Claremont in Glenageary in 1859, renaming the house Gowrie. It was from
here that Susannah dispensed her herbal remedies to ladies. Restorative preparations
for ladies who had conditions of a delicate nature and gratis to the poor. James was
retired by 1872 and died 20 Jan 1880 at Adelaide Road, St John’s Wood, London late of
Dublin and Lochgoilhead, Scotland and was buried at All Saints, Isleworth. Susanna was
living at Putney Hill, Wandsworth in 1884 and had four of her Leeson grandchildren
living with her. Susanna died 6 Jan 1884 Heston Lodge, Hayer Road, Brixton and was
buried with her husband.
1 Ianthe Mary Henrietta Reside born 18 Nov 1838 at 21 William Street baptised at
St Catherines. She married Edward Leachman at the British Consulate and
afterwards at the British Church, Geneva on 4 Mar 1866. Edward was of
Altadore, Co Dublin and died 29 Sep 1873 at Rockfield, Dalkey. Ianthe died at
the Stewart Institution, Palmerstown on 21 Mar 1905.
2 Jessica Charlotte born 24 Sep 1840 at Upper Charlemont Street baptised at St
Catherines. She married John Hodges on 10 Apr 1861 at Monkstown Parish
Church. She was resident at Glenageary and John was a merchant and son of
George Hodges a merchant. They lived for a time at Blackrock Lodge and had
twelve children.
3 William James Henry Reside born 20 July 1842 at Sandymount baptised at St
Catherines. William took over his father's business and died a bachelor at 21
College Green on 14 Mar 1888.
4 Florence Elizabeth Reside born 13 October 1844 at Sandymount baptised at St
Catherines. She married George John Robert Leeson on 30 Sep 1873 at
Monkstown parish church. Florence was resident at Kingstown and George
was an engineer on the HMS India and the son of George Warren Leeson. They
had a least four children by 1881.
5 Alexander Thomas Reside born 26 April 1849 at College Green baptised at St
Catherines was a pupil at Fulneck, Pudsey, Bradford, Yorkshire in 1861. He was a
woollen agent for 'Scotch & Yorkshire, Woollen Manufacturers' resident at Burr
Farm, Bexley Heath in Kent. He married Miriam Lara Lloyd at St James’, Piccadilly
on 11 Jan 1883. Minnie was the daughter of Stephen Lloyd of Fulham.
6 Alice Georgina Reside born 13 April 1847 at College Green baptised at St
Catherines. She married Henry Longden on 25 Jan 1872 at Monkstown parish
church. Henry was an iron founder from Sheffield and the son of Henry
Longden an iron founder. Alice was living at Broom Grove, London in 1880 and
at Endsleigh Street, St Pancras, London in 1921 and died a widow on 5 May 1925
at a nursing home.
