Charles born circa 1833 to James and Eliza Phillips was baptised 10 Jun 1833 at St Mary’s Dublin. His
father James was a painter and paper stainer. He married Susan Ulrica Hogg, daughter of Alexander
Hogg of HM Customs circa 1856. Charles was a organist, conductor and professor of music. He was
the organist of St Mary’s Church. He performed regularly at the Music Hall in Abbey Street in the late
1850’s on the Grand Organ removed from Christ Church Cathedral and in the Pillar Room at the
Rotunda in the 1860’s. His brother James accompanied him performing on the harmonium. Messrs
Piggott of Grafton Street published some of his music. The family were living at Mount Street Lower
in 1901 and Charles was the organist at Dalkey Church. They had 14 children of whom 9 survived to
1911 and they were living at Palmerston Road. Susan died 1 Jul 1913 at 63 Palmerston Road and
Charles died 1 Nov 1917.

5 Alexander William Phillips born 7 Dec 1863 at 37 Hardwicke Street baptised at St George’s
Church moved to Australia. He married Isabella Lorne there in 1887.
6 Ada Phillips born 18 May 1865 at Hardwicke Street living with her parents in 1911. She later
became a governess and died a spinster in 1961.
7 Alice Phillips born 20 Jul 1867 at 6 Blessington Street baptised at St George’s Church married
Joseph Peter Hopkins at the Church of the Holy Trinity, Rathmines on 7 Jul 1893.
8 Mabel Phillips born 15 Mar 1869 at 6 Blessington Street baptised at St George’s Church died at
2 Lansdowne Terrace on 15 Sep 1889.
9 Emily Maud Phillips born 4 Nov 1870 at 6 Blessington Street died 20 Jan 1872..
10 Arthur Frederick Phillips born 8 Dec 1872 at Haddington Road was a Chemist Clerk in 1901.
He married Edith Boughton, a widow and daughter of Peter Roe at the Church of the Holy
Trinity, Rathmines on 18 Nov 1903.
11 Reginald Stratford Phillips born 9 May 1874 at 38 Haddington Road was a traveller for a
grocer in 1901 and applied to be Freeman of the city in 1910 and a grain merchant and a member
of the corn exchange by 1911. He married Ethel Marion Flett on 26 Apr 1905 at the Presbyterian
Church, Rathgar. Ethel was the daughter of Thomas Hector Flett, a banker and Mary Christine
Stephen of 84 Palmerston Road. Reg was Hon Sec to the Sea scouts in 1914 and was also an asst
Scout master at 2nd Dublin. They lived at Fryars Land from 1917 to 1928 and put Fryarsland Hall
up for sale in 1928. Reginald and his son set up R S Phillips Ltd in 1929 address given as 6 Foster
Place. By 1930 they were living at Chorlton Hall, Chester and put it up for sale in 1936 as they
were going abroad. He was retired as a director of Johnson Mooney and O’Brien in 1944 a he had
been absent from the county for so long. Reginald died in New Zealand in 1963.
1 Hazel Oonagh Philipps youngest daughter 26 Feb 1907 at 84 Palmerston Road
was engaged to Dr Alastair Gordon Couston son of John Couston in 1933. Alastair was
the son of John Couston of Edinburgh.
2 Allan Reginald Patrick Phillips born 9 Jan 1909 at 84 Palmerston Road. He was a grain
broker and accompanied his mother to New Zealand in 1934.
3 Phyllis Sheelagh Phillips second daughter born 23 Apr 1911 at 84 Palmerston Road.
She married Dr William J Rothchild Johnson on 22 Apr 1934 at St Oswald's, Backford.
William was the son of Grant Johnston of Terenure, Dublin and an amateur boxing
champion. The moved to Shanghai where William was a hospital superintendent.
She travelled to New Zealand to visit her sister and her husband was killed in a plane
crash in January 1940 when he was travelling to join them. Sheelagh remained in New
Zealand.
4 Doris Ethel Ulrica Philips youngest daughter born 13 Nov 1912 at 84 Palmerston Road
engaged to Dr David Weston Chant Tough only son of David James Tough of
Edinburgh in 1934. David was the TB medical officer for Chester and Crewe. She
married William Mackenzie Barclay in Johannesburg SA on 21 Mar 1936. William was
the son of A L Barclay of New Brighton, Cheshire. Doris moved to New Zealand.
12 Ethel Grace Phillips 24 Nov 1876 born 1 Princes William Terrace, Beggars Bush married
George James McNeill on 1 Jul 1908 at Rathmines Parish Church.
13 Kathleen Ulrica Phillips born 28 Jul 1878 at 1 Princes William Terrace, Beggars Bush married
George Pfeilitzer Hunt at St Stephen’s Church, Mount Street on 10 Sep 1903 and they moved
to Canada.
14 Hamilton St John Phillips born 15 Apr 1880 at 1 Princes William Terrace, Beggars Bush was an
insurance clerk in 1901. He married Ellen Nora Lambert Stritch on 18 April 1908 at St George’s
Parish Church. They were living at Cowper Road in 1913 and were in Cumberland by 1921.
