John Reade born 1766 took Holy orders in 1791 aged 25 and was appointed a curate in
Co Wexford. In 1801 he was appointed curate to Stillorgan Parish and moved into Elysium
with Rev Beatty before moving to Obelisk Park and back to the Glebe in 1811. He opened
a school for poor children of the parish in 1802. This was based on the Lancasterian plan
which meant that the more proficient children acted as ushers or monitors and in turn
taught the less proficient children. He also established a ‘Poor Shop and Charitable
Repository’ which acted as a bank to the poorer people of Stillorgan. Their house in
Stillorgan was broken into via the roof in 1810 by robbers trying to steal the goods and
clothes held in the house for the poor, Mrs Reade was in labour at the time but the
servants managed to raise the alarm and the robbers fled.
In 1815 John was appointed minister of Clondalkin Parish and he set about re-creating
was he had running in Stillorgan. A school, a savings bank and asylum for widows were
soon in operation. By 1820 they were educating 70 children in the school which taught
poor children without religious distinction and only those professing the established religion
were given religious instruction by the clergy. Most of this was achieved by using his own
money and a charity sermon was run each year to provide help to the poor. In 1827 they
made a £1000 donation to the local poor by way of blankets, medicine or coal. They
encouraged the poor to save and buy food from the poor shop at a reduced price. He also
donated regularly to the RC female school which was set up in 1825.
