Arthur Lyons Carroll married Mabel Constance Milward

Arthur Lyons Carroll graduated from the Military Academy in 1878. He served in the Boar War
in the Natal Field Force and was present at Laing’s Nek. He married Mabel Constance Milward
on 20 May 1896 at Leeds. Mabel was the daughter of Thomas Milward and civil engineer and
his wife Sarah Ann Morgan. Arthur Lyons Carroll was granted a divorce from his wife in 1899.
She had refused to accompany him when orders sent him to Mauritius in 1898 and later had
an affair with widower Marcus Henry Milner.
Marcus Milner, a junior stockbroker, racehorse trainer, soldier and cricketer was no stranger
to scandal. In 1888 when he was 24 he married the twice widowed Caroline Agnes Horsley
Graham nee Beresford, Dowager Duchess of Montrose who was aged 70.
Mabel Constance Carroll was described as a well educated adventuress in 1908 when she
was convicted of fraud and served a year at Holloway prison. She was living with her aunt
Mary Morgan and lists herself as married in 1911. Living with her, a daughter Doreen Carroll
who was born circa 1906.
Arthur was Colonel Harding’s adjutant in the Leeds Artillery Volunteers. He was given
command of the 15th Company Garrison Artillery in 1906. He secondly married Ethelwyn
Marsden at All Saints Church, Norfolk Square, Paddington on 19 Jul 1906. Ethelwyn was the
daughter of Peter Crook Marsden and Margaret Ross of Bolton-le-Moors and they were
living in Southport in 1911. Arthur retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1909. He
was a manager, in the Cotton Mills, Fine Cotton Spinners & Doublers Association Ltd in 1921
and the family were living at 25 Park Road, Southport. He was later a director of Fine Cotton
Spinners and Doublers Association and of James Marsden & Sons. Ethelwyn of the Prince of
Wales Hotel, Southport died 29 Aug 1936 aged 59 and left 33K in personal estate. She left all
her property on trust for her children, or their issue attaining majority.
1 Roderick Desmond Carroll only child born 13 Oct 1912 in Southport and was
a resident of the Prince of Wales Hotel, Southport in 1836. He married Rosemary
Meerwald Baker on 22 Jun 1937 at Dunboyne Parish Church. Rosemary born
4 Dec 1914 in Cork was the only daughter of Robert John Baker, an auditor and
Elaine Mary McConnell and was living at Lower Fitzwilliam Street. They lived at
Knocksinna House from 1940 to 1947 and later in Sandycove and Dalkey. The
family are buried at Deansgrange.
Arthur thirdly married Elizabeth Gray Patton on 14 Apr 1939. Elizabeth was the eldest daughter
of the late Thomas Patton of Litherland. Arthur died on 19 Jun 1939 at The Rectory, Priston,
Bath. Probate to his wife Elizabeth Gray Carroll.
