Rambaut Family of Blackrock and Dublin
The Rev. Edmund Francis Rambaut was the son of William Rambaut and Marianne Gibney and he was
descended from Jean Rambaut the youngest son of Leonard Pierre Rambaut of Duras who fled
France to Ireland in 1754 and was one of the founders of the French Church. His eldest brother
Richard fled to San Domingo. Lore has it that Jean was the first man to use an umbrella in Ireland.
Jean Rambaut married Marie Hautenville daughter of Samuel Hautenville and Elizabeth Wilkins. The
Hautenville family living in Blackrock were also Hugenots of ancient French Lineage.

Wines married Margaret Elizabeth Read born circa 1835 died 1910. Frederick died on
21.10.1906 late of Templeville, Killiney.

1st cousin Madeline Marlande on 13.09.1853 at Rathfarnham Church. The brides brother
Rev John Marlane officiated. Madeline born circa 1829 died on 13.12.1887. Edmond was the
incumbent of Christ Church Blackrock from 1871 until his death in 1893. Edmund died at 13
Idrone Terrace, Blackrock on 26.02.1893 and is buried at Deansgrange. Memorial of altar,
pulpit and reading desk erected to his memory in Carysfort Church. Before the Church was
demolished these memorials were given to the little Church in Drumcar, Co Louth.

died January 1886 and is buried at Ventnor, Isle of Wight aged 29 years.
3 Anne Elizabeth Rambaut born 19.11.1857 at Templemore and died 11.03.1883 aged
25 years.
4 Arthur Alcock Rambaut born 21.09.1859 Waterford. Arthur married Emily Longford
daughter of J.H. Longford on 02.01.1883 at St Philip & St James, Booterstown. He won a
first science scholarship in 1880 at Trinity College and took his degree in 1881. That same
year he was a gold medallist in mathematics and in mathematical physics. He took his
masters at the Royal School, Armagh and in 1882 he was appointed assistant at the Dublin
University Observatory at Dunsink under Sir Robert Ball. He his credited with the "Dunskink
Observations and Researches" cataloguing nearly 3000 stars. Arthur died at an Oxford
Nursing home on 14.10.1923 and is buried at Holywell, Oxford. Emily Rambaut died
04.08.1948 of Hornsey Lane, Highgate.

an Assistant Conservator of Forests, Federated Malay States married Marguerite Florence
Ada (Rita) Lund younger daughter of Mr and Mrs F.B. Lund, Lawrence Park, Bronxville,
New York on 24.08.1922 at St Helen’s, Albury, Oxon. Arthur went to Malaya in 1909. He
served with the Northumberland Fusiliers between 1915-1916 and retired after 30 years
with the Forestry in 1939. He died on 02.06.1945, Old Wall, Midford, Bath.

married Gladys Vansittart Frere daughter of Mr and Mrs A Vansittart Frere of Abbotsrood,
Meads, Eastbourne on 03.10.1918 at Holy Trinity Church, Brompton.
3 Hugh Calder Rambaut youngest son born circa 1894 married Stephanie Rambaut
daughter of B.R.R. Rambaut of Baythorne Park, Essex at St Augustine’s Church,
Birdbrook, Essex circa 15.09.1934.
5 John Gerrard Rambaut born circa 1861 died on 13.04.1863 at Newtown Buildings,
Waterford.
6 Madalene Marland Rambaut born 08.01.1864 at Newtown Buildings, Waterford and
died 01.09.1876 aged 12 years. Or 13.12.1887
7 Dr Daniel Frederick Rambaut youngest son born 06.08.1865 at 3 Newtown Buildings
in Waterford. He played rugby for Monkstown and Dublin University and represented
Ireland as an international in 1887 and 1888. He was also a hurdler and a cricketer.
He studied at Wakefield Mental Hospital and at Vienna University. On his return to
Ireland he became assistant medical officer and pathologist at the Richmond District
Lunatic Asylum, Grangegorman, Dublin. He married Esther Graham Ling youngest
daughter of Christopher Ling of Sandridge, Birkdale in 1909. Daniel died 30.11.1937 at
Northampton.
