John Radcliffe born circa 1765 was a lawyer and a Judge the only son of Rev Richard
Radclifff and Christian Mason daughter of Robert Mason of Galway. When his father
died circa 1766 the family had moved to Drogheda. He was educated with his lifetime
friend Richard Jebb who went on to become Justice of the Court of the King’s Bench.
John married Catherine Cox, daughter of Michael Cox Archbishop of Cashel, in 1787
and they moved to London. John was co-author with Richard Jebb and Theobald
Wolfe of the satirical novel “Belmont Castle”.
1 Rev Richard Radcliff eldest son born circa 1794 and died 04.10.1818 aged 24
years and was buried at Donnybrook.
John secondly married Betanna Sheridan (Betanna widow of John Slacke by whom she
had one son Benjamin) before 1798. Betanna died 07.10.1857 at Loughbawn, Co
Westmeath aged 85 and was buried at Donnybrook.
2 John Radcliff born 05.11.1799 late Chairman of the Board of Public Works
married Maria Louisa Marsden daughter of Alexander Marsden on 28.04.1825
at St George’s by his Grace the Archbishop of Armagh. John died 21.05.1869 at
Morehampton and is buried at Donnybrook. Maria died on 21.12.1871 at
Morehampton, Donnybrook.
3 Joseph Ormsby Radcliff a Barrister 2nd son born on 09.04.1824 educated
Trinity College and admitted Kings Inns. He married Hon Mary Elizabeth de
Montmorency daughter of Lodge Evans de Montmorency 1st Viscount
Frankfort on 09.04.1833 at Mullingar. Mary Elizabeth died on 10.06.1838 at
Upper Mount Street and is buried at St Peter’s Church, Dublin. Joseph died
18.10.1862 aged 61 years at Upper Mount Street.
1 Richard Radcliff born circa Oct 1835 and died circa 05.04.1836 aged 6
months and is buried at St Peter’s Church.
2 Joseph Radcliff born 20.04.1838 at 51 Upper Mount Street baptised at
St Peter’s Church, Dublin. In 1871 Joseph a Barrister was living at the
Old Burlington Street Palace and Burlington Hotel at St James,
Westminster and in 1881 Joseph unmarried was living at 24 Montague
Place, St Giles, London.
4 Charlotte Sarah Radcliff of Mespil House married George Battersby a barrister
eldest son of Thomas Battersby of Newcastle, Co Meath on 11.12.1830 at
Mespil House, Dublin in the Parish of St Peter. Charlotte died on 17.08.1876
aged 70 years at Loughbawn and George died on 09.06.1880 aged 77 years at
20 Lower Leeson Street, Dublin.
1 Bettana Catherine Battersby born 10.10.1831 at 19 Leeson Street.
2 Thomas George Battersby born circa 1832 baptised St Peter’s Church.
3 John Radcliff Battersby born circa 1839.
