James Price, second son born 18 Jan 1831 to James Price of Monkstown and his wife Martha
Charlotte Pidgeon. He graduated from Trinity College, Dublin, BA Civil Engineering in 1851.
James resident at Banbridge married Frances Alicia Peebles on 7 Feb 1855 at St Mary’s Church,
Dublin. Frances was the daughter of John Peebles, MD of North Frederick Street, Dublin.
He was resident engineer of the the Banbridge Junction Railway from 1855 to 1857 and later
worked on the Wicklow Harbour improvements. From 1859 to 1860 he was resident engineer
on the construction of the Cootehill and Ballybay line and the next two years were spent on
the Dublin and Belfast Junction Railway. In 1862 he was appointed resident engineer of the
Midland Great Western Railway. He also worked as an engineer to the Royal Canal and
designed two floating swing-bridges. They lived at Clonsilla Lodge, Co Dublin which he put up
for sale in 1868.
In 1877 he opened his own private practice in Dublin and worked on a new dock at Galway
and on the Lough Erne drainage scheme. The lived at Knockeevin Greystones, Co Wicklow
from 1882. He was also consulting engineer for the Cork & Macroom Railway. He died from
influenza complicated by pneumonia on 4 Apr 1895. He was buried at Redford, Greystones
and left 5K in personal estate. Frances died at Knockeevin on 6 Jan 1907 and was buried with
er husband.
1 James Price born 1 Dec 1855 at Banbridge graduated BA in engineering from Trinity
College Dublin in 1878. James, a civil engineer living at Belleek married Anne Langley
Nairn Armstrong on 19 Jul 1883 at Belleek Parish Church. Annie was the daughter
of Robert W Armstrong, an architect and founder director of Belleek pottery. Her
mother was Annie Langley Nairn, the landscape painter who also designed for
Belleek pottery. Her parents lived at Rose Isle, Belleek. Annie died 1 Mar 1888 at
The island, Belleek age 23 from puerperal Fever after the birth of Annie.
1 Eileen Frances Nairn Price born 29 Jun 1884 at Belleek Island, Co Donegal
attended Cork High School. She was living in Cork with her father and
stepmother in 1911. She was a Red Cross VAD and helped survivors of the
Lusitania and the Arabic at Queenstown in 1915. She served in the Central
Military Hospital, Cork in 1916, Malta in 1917 and Salonika in 1918. She was
invalided from Salonika to Malta on 1 Dec 1918 and returned home to
Ireland later that year. She was living at Stonings, Old Compton Lane,
Farnham, Surrey with her sister Annie in 1939. She died 23 Jan 1974 at
Taney House, Newtown Park, Blackrock and left 20K in personal estate.
2 Annie Ruth Price born 15 Feb 1888 at Belleek Island. She was with her
grandmother Frances on the 1901 census. Living with father and stepmother
in 1911 and living at Stonings Old Compton Lane, Farnham, Surrey with her
sister in 1939. Anne was commissioned by Elizabeth Yeats of Cuala Press for
designs and exhibited over 20 works at the Dublin Sketching Club annual
exhibitions including an Illustration for ‘The Letters of Mrs Delany 1700-1788’,
‘The child, St Brigid’ and ‘St Patrick, the young man’. She was one of the artists
whose work was on display at the Cuala Press exhibition at Newtown School,
Waterford in 1934 and Stephen’s Green in 1948. She lived with her sister
Eileen at Taney House on Newtownpark Avenue. Annie died 7 Aug 1968 at
Taney House, Newtown Park, Blackrock and left 10k in personal estate. She
was buried at Redford in Greystones.
James secondly married Elizabeth Dorothea Gaussen in 1893. In 1894 James was
working on the Kyle Railway in Scotland, Elizabeth died in April 1894 shortly after the
birth of their son and James returned to Ireland in April 1895.
3 Charles Gaussen Price born 1894 at Plockton, Rosshire, Scotland living with
his father in 1901 and 1911. He enlisted and served in WW1 with Royal Irish
Regiment, Worcestershire Regiment and attained the rank of captain. He was
the informant at his father’s death in 1936. He was the racing manager at
Reading Greyhound Stadium during WW2 and later worked for the Ministry
of Agriculture. He died in a motor accident on 19 May 1955 at Tilehurst.
James thirdly married Lilian Henrietta Louisa Chermside on 7 Nov 1896 at St Stephen’s,
Westbourne Park, London. Lilian was born circa 1851 in the West Indies and was the
daughter of Major General Henry Lowther Chermside, CB Royal Artillary and the
granddaughter of the later Sir Robert Alexander Chermside, KCH, KRE. They lived at
Ringacoltig, part of Beausite Terrace, Queenstown, Cork from 1901 to 1911. There
was no issue from the third marriage by 1911. James was resident engineer at Cork
Harbour until 1933. He died on 28 Sept 1936 at Rushbrooke, Cobh. His son Charles
the informant.
2 Alfred Dickinson Price born 16 Sep 1857 in Co Wicklow. He married Henrietta
Hester Mary Fairbrother of 31 Marlborough Road, Donnybrook, Dublin, daughter
of G B Fairbrother, a merchant on 7 Mar 1882, at Sandford Parish Church,
Ranelagh, Dublin. Alfred a civil engineer of Headview, Novara Avenue, Bray.
3 Edward Billingham Price born 21 May 1859 at Banbridge married Annie Dobbs,
daughter of Robert Cathcart Dobbs and Harriet Adelaide Traill Price. Edward died
at Sydney NSW on 15 Jan 1896.
4 Ellen Frances Price eldest daughter born 3 Mar 1861 at Dundalk married Edward
Synge at Greystones Church on 11 Sep 1895. Edward was son of John Hatch Synge.
Ellen died 14 Aug 1935.
5 Walter Cromwell Price born 16 Dec 1862 died 1 Nov 1937 at Crowthorne,
Berkshire.
6 Arthur George Price born 20 April 1864 at Clonsilla Lodge, Co Dublin died
11 Dec 1948 at Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
7 Ivan Henry Price born circa 1866 in Co Dublin was of Cappagh House, Cappawhite,
Co Tipperary was a district inspector with the RIC. He died in 1931.
8 Alan Price born 30 Jun 1867 at Clonsilla Lodge, Co Dublin died in Australia 9 Jan 1944.
9 Alice Ruth Price born circa 1869 in Dublin living with her mother at Greystones in 1901
and died 23 Oct 1916 at Beechwood Avenue.
