Powell family of Bellosquardo
There is a Robert Powell listed by the Deputy Keeper of Ireland as marrying Mary Hutchinson
circa 18.09.1776 and this could probably be the father of Robert Powell born circa 1780 who
lived at Bellosquardo on Newtown Park, Blackrock, Co Dublin. Joseph Goff sold land on
Newtown Park to Robert Powell for £1,300 in 1833. Robert is listed in Griffiths Valuation in
1849 as having a house valued at £110 in Galloping Green North. Robert died on 15.01.1861
aged 81 years and Elizabeth his wife born circa 1784 died at Bellosquardo on 24.04.1866
aged 82 years.
Nathaniel Robert Powell, 1st son of Robert Powell and Elizabeth née Johnston was born
29.12.1821 in Florence, graduated from Trinity College Dublin with a BA in 1844 and a MA in
1873. Nathaniel was admitted to the bar on 18 Jan 1849 and married Annette Georgina Mary
Groome eldest daughter of the Rev Edward Groome, the rector of Beaulieu, Drogheda and
Frances Emily Uniacke, on 22.03.1854 at Monkstown Church. They had 8 children and all
were baptised in Christ Church, Carysfort, Blackrock, Co Dublin. Nathaniel died 07.10.1887
and is buried at Mount Jerome. He left 17k in personal estate. Annette died 29.04.1896.
1 Robert Edward Powell son born 28.03.1855. Robert a captain in the 1st Royal Sussex
Regiment died on 10.11.1889 aged 34 years at Bellosquardo. A memorial was erected
by his brother officers at Stillorgan parish church.
2 Hugh Nathaniel Powell, 2nd son born 18.04.1857 was a pupil of Windermere College in
England in 1871. He married Susan Berdée Mason of Elm Grove 3rd daughter of late Rev
Thomas Wall Mason of Tichborne, Hampshire on 28.12.1882 at Cape Town. Their
daughter Eileen was born in Cape Town in 1883. In 1901 they were living in Castletown
on the Isle of Man. Susan Berdée Powell of Alexander Terrace, Dalkey died on 18.03.1906.
Hugh died on 27.09.1914 at Plumtree Rectory, Nottingham the residence of his brother
Charles.
3 Charles Doyne Powell (Rev) born 02.01.1859, 3rd son married Minnie Lowry 2nd daughter
of William Luce-Hosking on 15.09.1887 at St Marks Church, Notting Hill, London. Charles
died on 28.07.1915 at Plumtree Rectory, Nottingham. Minnie died 27.01.1927 at
Middlesex, England.
4 Nathaniel Johnstone Hutchinson Powell born 10.06.1860 visiting Kensington in 1881 with
Harriet Groome. He was a captain in the 23rd Pioneers Indian Staff Corps who died of
Cholera on 01.10.1900 aged 38 years at Mian Moa in the Punjab and is buried in Bengal.
5 Una Isabella Elizabeth Powell born 04.01.1862 lived at Bellosquardo for her entire life.
Una died 13.07.1917 at Bellosquardo and left 4k in personal estate.
6 Joseph Frederic Powell born 15.09.1864 and died on 24.08.1872 aged 8 years.
7 Alice Mary Barton Powell born 15.08.1867 living at Galloping Green in 1901 moved with her
sister Mabel to Kilmurray Grove in 1909 and bred Jersey cows for which she won many
awards. She was Hon Sec of the Wicklow branch of the RSPCA and died 22.06.1947 at
Kilmurray Grove and is buried at Christ Church, Delgany.
8 Annette Charlotte Mabel (Mabel) Powell born 07.12.1871 at Bellosquardo moved to Kilmurray
Grove in 1909 with her sister Alice. She put the house up for sale in 1952 and died 14.03.1958
at the Adelaide Hospital late of Kilpeddar, Co Wicklow and is buried at Christ Church, Delgany.
