Henry Chapman born circa 1866 at Tower Hill London one of five children born to Benjamin
James Poulter and Elizabeth Anne Forman. His father was a comptroller in the Lamp Lighting
Department and he initially worked in a solicitor’s office. He married Alice Sarah Jeffries in
1892. Alice was the daughter of James and Emma Jeffries. Her father died when she was just
a baby. Henry was a manager and company secretary to The Dublin branch of the Yorkshire
Insurance Company from 1894. He was president of the Insurance Institute of Ireland in
1903. In 1909 they lived at Woodfield, (St Aidans) Roebuck and all seven of their children
survived. The then moved to St Brigid's where Henry died on 31 Oct 1927. He left 1k in
personal estate, probate to his widow. The family moved to 78 Rathgar Road in 1936 and
later to 2 Frankfort Park, Dundrum. Alice died 17 Nov 1963 at Adelaide Street, her son Terry
the informant.
1 Henry Chapman Poulter born 1894 at West Ham, Essex baptised 29 Apr 1894 at
Emmanuel Church, Forest Gate. He was an insurance clerk living with his parents at
Roebuck in 1911. He enlisted (soldier number: 1427) in Horsham in 1914 and was
posted to Gallipoli in August 1915. He was a captain in the 8th Battalion, Royal
Dublin Fusiliers. He died of wounds 29 Nov 1917 at the No 11 Field hospital at
Fontaine-les-Croisille. He is commemorated at the St Leger British Cemetery, France.
He is also remembered on the St Andrew’s College War Memorial in Booterstown and
on a memorial in Taney Church.
2 Edgar Allen Poulter born 1895 at 38 Glen Park Rd, Forest Gate baptised 29 Dec 1895 at
Emmanuel Church, Forest Gate. He enlisted and served with the 7th Battalion, D
Company ‘The Pals’, Royal Dublin Fusiliers as Lance Corporal. He fought at Gallipoli and
survived WW1. He was living at 78 Rathgar Road and married Ada (Doddie) Baird on
25 Mar 1936 at the Presbyterian Church in Artane. Ada was the daughter of David
George Baird of Craigford, Artane and his wife Ada Sophia Griffen. They lived at Newtown
House, Swords and later a farm at Ballyowen House, Lucan and they had one daughter.
Edgar was Hon Sec to the ISPCA and a director of Maguire & Patterson. He died
1 Oct 1975 and was buried in Mount Jerome. When Ada died she was buried with her
husband.
3 Terence Bernard Poulter born 3 Jun 1898 at 12 Elma Terrace, Donnybrook was educated
at St Andrew’s College, Dublin. He enlisted and served as Lieutenant Acting Captain with
the Royal Dublin Fusiliers.
He was appointed an inspector with the Yorkshire Insurance Company in 1927. He
married Theresa Florence Bannerman on 19 Jun 1935 at Chelsea Registry Office. Tess
was a divorcee and ex wife of David Douglas Bannerman. She fell in love with Terry on a
visit to Ireland in 1932 and she and her husband divorced in 1934. She was living at 56
Morhampton Road and was the only daughter of the late Captain J Wynne Smith of
Raheengraney, Clonegal, Co Wicklow. A reception was held at the Berkeley Hotel in
Piccadilly and they honeymooned in the Chennel Islands. They lived at Kill Lane,
Deansgrange in 1963 where Tess died on 11 July 1965 and was buried at Mount Jerome.
Terence was one on the oldest survivors of WW1 and spent his final years at Leopardstown
Park Hospital. He died on Christmas Eve aged 94 and his funeral service was held at St
Mary’s Donnybrook. He was buried with his wife.
4 Wilfred Forman Poulter born 22 Dec 1899 at Grasmere Villas, Sutton. Second lieutenant
Wilfred Forman Poulter, of the 24th Squadron, Royal Flying Corps was shot down and
wounded during combat with Richtofen’s squadron at Villers Outreaux. He died of
wounds on 6 Mar 1918 and was buried in France. He is remembered at Honnechy
British Cemetery. He is also remembered on the St Andrew’s College war memorial in
Booterstown and on a memorial in Taney Church.
5 Cecil Edward Poulter born 15 Jul 1903 at Portobello house, father resident at Rathgar
Road. Cecil E. Poulter. He was underage when he enlisted and survived WW1. He
emigrated to South Africa and enlisted in the British Army again for WWII with the Natal
Mounted Rifles, S A Forces and served with the 1st Regiment. He was killed in Egypt on
22 Jun 1942 and is remembered at Halfaya Sollum War Cemetery.
6 Alice Dora Poulter born 26 Nov 1906 at 188 Rathgar Road, Dublin trained as a music
teacher and received her junior teaching certificate in 1927.
7 Marjorie Constance Poulter born 2 Apr 1909 at Woodfield, Roebuck. She married Robert
Cecil Thompson on 16 September 1936. Robert of 21 Palmerston Road, Rathmines was a
business manager and the son of Robert John Thompson, a land agent. They lived at
Woodlawn, Churchtown where she died on 24 Nov 1962. Her funeral service was held at
St Nahi’s Dundrum and she was buried at Mount Jerome. Robert died on 15 Mar 1976.
