Lieutenant Colonel Henry Plews son of William Plews and Frances Towler of Masham, Yorkshire the
general manager of the Great Northern Railway married Margaretta Mary Wilson Kelly daughter of
Robert Kelly on 05.09.1871 at the Parish Church, Carrickfergus. He was a Lieut Colonel in the
Engineer and Railway Staff Corps and was manager of the Great Northern Railway until his
retirement in 1911 but stayed on in the role of director.
Colonel and Mrs Plews gave a garden party when they moved into Temora in July 1904. They lived
at Temora until the death of Henry in 1918. He was buried at the City Cemetery in Belfast.

1 Catherine Frances Theodora Plews, eldest daughter born 13.09.1872 at Prospect House,
Enniskillen married Harold Appleby of The Green near Blackburn at St Margarets, Westminster
in January 1904. They honeymooned in Egypt.
2 Ettie Louise Cunningham Plews 05.02.1974 at Prospect House, Enniskillen and attended
Bedford High School in Bedfordshire. Ettie was in Carrickfergus with her Uncle Robert Kelly in
1901. Later that year Ettie married Henry Montgomery Crozier a Tea Planter son of Rev John
Crozier of Guildford, Down on 14.11.1901 at St Mary’s Church, Donnybrook. Henry died on
06.11.1930 at Bognor Nursing Home, Bognor Regis and Ettie died on 30.11.1936 of 11 Tudor
Court, Castle Way, Hanworth, Middlesex.
1 John Louis Crozier born 28.11.1916 at Silchar, Bengal, India.
3 Mary Edith Plews born born 25.01.1876 at Prospect House, Enniskillen and attended Bedford
High School in Bedfordshire. Mary Edith married Joseph Humphrey McConnell son of
Thomas McConnell on 01.06.1899 at St Mary’s Church, Donnybrook. J H was a tea merchant,
later Chairman of the Londonderry Harbour Board and died in July 1945. The family lived at
Tripoli, Londonderry.

2 Nora Margaret McConnell second daughter born 29.06.1901 at Bellevue, Londonderry,
married Reginald Leslie Morrish, second son of R J Morrish of Pinewood, Shortlands, Kent
in February 1927 at Derry Cathedral.
4 Gertrude Meta Plews born 16.08.1880 at 7 Brighton Terrace, Bundoran and died unmarried
on 11th April 1960 aged 81 years at Rockfield House, Newtownpark Avenue and was buried at
Deansgrange.
5 Muriel Olivetti Plews born 07.04.1883 at Prospect House, Enniskillen and died unmarried on
23.01.1959 aged 74 years at the Meath Hospital late of Rockfield House, Newtownpark Avenue
and formerly of The Cottage, Shantallow, Londonderry, died on 22 Jan 1959 aged 74 was buried at
Deansgrange. She left 50K in personal estate.
6 Robert Henry Cunningham Plews* born 18.01.1886 at Prospect House, Enniskillen living at
Temora married Louisa Frances Kennedy daughter of George O’Brien Kennedy of Bloomfield,
Merrion on 06.09.1911 at St Mary’s Church, Donnybrook. Robert was a badminton player and
Men's singles champion in 1913. He enlisted at the outbreak of WW1 and relinquished a very
promising railway career. He was in Egypt in 1918 when his father died. He served with Royal Army
Service Corps and attained the rank of Major. Louisa was a badminton doubles champion in 1925.
Robert was hon sec of the Irish Badminton Union. They also played lawn tennis at Donnybrook LTC.
Robert a railway official died 25.09.1945 aged 59 years at Belle View, Stillorgan. Louisa died at
Bellevue, Leopardstown on 10 Dec 1969 aged 88 and was buried at Deansgrange.
1 John Balfour Plews only son born 12.06.1912 at 24 Waltham Terrace. Major John Plews
of the RAMC married Ruth Marjorie Joynt at the Garrison Church, Hanover, BAOR, Germany
on 15 Apr 1947. Ruth was the daughter of Rev G A Joynt of Dundalk and was with the
Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service (QAIMNS).
2 Joan Frances Plews born 11.11.1913 at Melrose, Proby Square, Blackrock was educated at
the French School Bray. She attended Alexandra College and played senior hockey for Old
College. She hunted with the Bray Harriers and won a hockey cap for Leinster and Ireland
before the war. She played Hockey for both Middlesex and Essex and returned to the
Leinster team after the war, winning another cap in 1952. She also won the Leinster cup for
Badminton doubles in 1958 and 1959. In her later years she was a competitive bridge player.
