Pitman of ‘The Cottage’, Clonskeagh
Maurice William Pitman born postumusly on 3 Apr 1826 in Cawnpore, Bengal, India
to Captain Henry Eyre Pitman of the 59th Regiment and Dorothea Hannah Harriott.
His father was killed at the Breach of Burtpoor on 18 Jan 1826. He took Holy
orders and married Frances (Fanny) Austen Browne from Cork at North Waltham,
Hampshire on 17 Jul 1850. Frances was the youngest daughter of Thomas Ware
Browne, Registrar of HM Customs, Isle of Alderney late of Cork. They were living
at St Giles London in 1851 where he was was a clergyman. He was appointed to
the curacy of King’s Cliff in 1852. His mother Dorothea died on 12 Feb 1857. Fanny
died in Lewisham in 1869.
1 Maurice Anthony John Pitman born 7 Jun 1852 King's Cliffe, Northamptonshire
was a tea merchants clerk in 1871 and later a commercial traveller. He died in
1918.
2 Maurice Arthur Thomas Pitman born circa 1864 in Lewisham, London
married Emma Mary Grant Farrant from Malta in April 1886 Acton Parish
Church. Emma was the eldest daughter of Dover Farrant, Staff Commander,
RN, Portsmouth and Gloucester. Maurice was an electrical engineer. In 1891
they were living at Stow Street, Low Church, Paisley, Renfrewshire. By 1911
they had seven children and all had survived. The lived at ‘The Cottage’ on
Clonskeagh Road from 1898 until 1943. Maurice died 31 Jan 1942 at the
Cottage, Roebuck and left 7K in personal estate. Emma died 18 Feb 1954 at
7 Waltham Terrace, Blackrock. Her funeral was held SS Philip and St James’s
Church.

2 Phylis I Pitman born circa 1892 in Paisley, Scotland was a clerk. She died
a spinster on 16 Aug 1941 at Baggot Street Hospital late of The Cottage,
Clonskeagh.
3 Charles Harriott Pitman born 23 Mar 1893 at Newgrove Avenue,
Sandymount an electrical engineer apprentice living at Erdington,
Warwickshire in 1911. He was an electrician and died a bachelor on
13 May 1925 at Loughinstown Hospital after falling off a motorcycle at
Shankill Bridge, Rathmichael on 10 May 1925.
4 Dorothy Norah Pitman born 22 Feb 1895 at Newgrove Avenue off
Sandymount Green, Dublin. Dorothy died a spinster on 16 Jul 1976 and
was buried at St Patrick’s Enniskerry.
5 Marjorie Evelyn Pitman born 13 Dec 1897 at The Cottage, Clonskeagh
died a spinster on 8 May 1979 and was buried at St Patrick’s, Enniskerry.
6 Violet Eileen Pitman born 27 Feb 1902 at The Cottage, Clonskeagh.
7 Mildred Mabel born 7 May 1903 at The Cottage, Clonskeagh living at
Waltham, Terrace in 1954 died 19 Dec 1980 late of Oaldene, Stradbrook Rd,
Blackrock. She left 32K in personal estate.
He secondly married Selina Letts King in 1870 in Hampstead, London and was living at
Woolwich in 1871. He had no cure of souls and worked at Queen’s College, Oxford. Selina
died in August 1897 after a visit to Ireland. An inquest was held into her death as she
suffered from ‘Moral insanity’ according to her husband.
He thirdly married Elizabeth Ellis on 15 Sep 1897 at St Paul's Penzance, Cornwall. Elizabeth
was the daughter of William Ellis. Maurice died 8 Feb 1902 in Islington, London.
