John Phillips born circa 1853 third son of Thomas and Bridget Phillips of Airmount, Bawnboy.
His father Thomas died at Airmount in 1876 aged 75. John married Margaret McManus on
13 Jan 1890 at Strokestown. John was a farmer of Bawnboy and Margaret was the daughter
of Charles McManus, a shopkeeper/draper and his wife Maria Fox. John’s mother died in
June 1894 aged 80 at Airmount, Bawnboy. Margaret died 30 Oct 1894 age 21 at Airmount.
1 Mary Kathleen (Kathleen) Phillips born 1 Feb 1891 at Airmount staying with her step
mother’s parents at Kilconny in 1901.
2 Patrick T Phillips born 8 Jul 1892 living with his father and stepmother Minnie at Kilsob
in 1901 was with the British Royal Navy Seamen in 1911. During WW1, he served as a
Second Lieutenant, Manchester Regiment, attached to East Lancashire Regiment. By
January 1916 the family were worried as they had not heard from him. He was
reported missing in action in April 1916. An official announcement was issued in
May 1916 that he had been killed in action at Mesopotamian.
3 Francis Phillips 17 Sep 1893 at Airmount, Kilsob died 13 Oct 1893 at Airmount.
John Phillips secondly married Mary Louisa (Minnie) Yaw at Staghall Roman Catholic Church
on 8 Feb 1899. Mary Louisa born 18 Sep 1870 was the daughter of John Yaw, JP, a Cavan
farmer and chairman of the Belturbet Urban council, and his wife Adela Louisa McNess
originally from Galway. They were living at Airmount House Kilsob in 1901. John died
16 Mar 1902 at Airmount House, Kilsob, his brother William J Phillips, the informant. Minnie
was living at Kilsob with her three daughters in 1911 and in Deanery Street, Belturbet by
1916. Airmount house by then was an RIC barracks.
4 John Thomas born 24 Jan 1900 at Kilsob Co Cavan staying with his maternal
grandparents in Kilconny 1901 and 1911.
5 Agnes Josephine Phillips (twin) born 27 Apr 1901 at Kilsob, Co Cavan living with her
mother in 1911. She married Patrick Joseph M Kelly on 1 Aug 1934 at the Church of
Our Lady of Refuge, Rathmines. Witnesses Florence Phillips and Dermot (Quinn?).
Patrick was a widower and the son of John Kelly a farmer. Patrick was a grocer and
dairy proprietor of 162 Rathmines Road from 1930 - 1934 and was the postmaster
of Stillorgan by 1937, living on site. Patrick died 29 Apr 1947 aged 68, his funeral
Mass was held at St Laurence's and he was buried at Deansgrange. Agnes continued at
the Post Office with her sister Florence and her brother-in-law Jim until she died on
18 Oct 1954 and was buried with her husband. The Post office was taken over by
Agnes’s daughter in 1975.
6 Florence Mary Phillips (twin) born 27 Apr 1901 at Kilsob Co Cavan living with her
mother in 1911. She married James Philip Kennedy on 11 Feb 1936 at the Church
of Our Lady of Refuge, Rathmines. James was a garage proprietor from Belturbet
and the son of Phillip Kennedy, a commercial traveller. He died 14 Feb 1972 aged
68 late of the Post Office Stillorgan. Florence died 13 Jan 1976 late of the Post Office,
Stillorgan and was buried at Deansgrange.
7 Minnie Louisa (Moya) Phillips born posthumously on 5 Jul 1902 at Kilsob, Co Cavan
living with her mother in 1911.
