Philip Hughes married Susan Gavan. Susan was the daughter of Patrick Gavan. Philip was a
corn merchant of Canal Quay, Newry. He was bankrupt in 1830 and his premises, dwelling
house and stores were put up for sale and he died shortly thereafter. Following his death
the family had to support themselves. The family moved to 33 Marlborough Street, Dublin
by the end of 1830 and opened a seminary for ladies. They moved to Whitehall, Blackrock
in 1835 and opened it as Whitehall Day & Boarding School for Ladies. The school was very
successful and Dr Cahill of Seafort school visited to give the ladies lectures in astronomy,
chemistry and other scientific studies. Susan died at Mountainview, Dalkey in June 1858.

3 Marian Hughes second daughter married Samuel Dawson Downing on 15 Oct 1846
at Whitehall, Blackrock. Samuel was from Birkenhead.
4 Ellen Hughes fourth daughter married Mons. Eugene De Cumont at La Rochelle.
Eugene was the Military Administrator of La Rochelle.
5 Terence MacMahon Hughes born circa 1812 in Newry worked for the Dublin Press and
later Portugues Correspondent for The Times. He was a journalist and poet who wrote
satirical political work. He was author of 'song of the Island', 'Irish Stew' in 1836 and
'The Biliad' in 1846. He worked with Charles Gavan Duffy on the Belfast Vindicator and
contributed verse to The Nation newspaper. He died on 19 Mar 1848 at Lisbon.
6 Susan Hughes fifth daughter born circa 1826 taught at Mountjoy and the Whitehall
school and gave pianoforte lessons from her residence at 25 Lower Baggot Street. She
married her first cousin Charles Gavan Duffy at Whitehall, Blackrock on 8 Feb 1847. The
marriage was registered in Booterstown R C Church and required a dispensation from the
archbishop. Charles was the son of John Duffy and Ann Gavan and was a widower and a
barrister. In 1842 Charles had co-founded The Nation newspaper with Thomas Osborne
Davis, and John Blake Dillon. In 1848 Charles was arrested for sedition as a result of
publishing a manifesto The creed of ‘The Nation’. He continued to edit the Nation from
prison, but handed control to his sister in law; Margaret Callan. In the 1852 general
election Charles became MP for New Ross. Disenchanted and tired of politics in Ireland,
the family emigrated to Australia in 1856. In 1857 he was elected to the first parliament
of Victoria. Susan, Lady Duffy died 21 Sep 1878 at Auburn Lodge, Hawthorne, Melbourne,
Australia.

Representatives from 1901 to 1917 and of the Senate from 1917 to 1920. He died
23 Feb 1932.
4 Harriet Gavan Duffy born 1859 died in 1951.
5 Philip Cormac Gavan Duffy born 1861 was a surveyor and civil engineer noted for
his work in Western Australia on the Coolgardie water supply. He died in 1954.
6 Geraldine Mary Gavan Duffy born 1865 died in 1955.

8 Margaret Hughes born circa 1817 in Newry. Margaret was a writer, teacher, and
nationalist. She published under the pseudonym Thornton MacMahon. She married
John B Callan, MD, of 2 Merrion Row at Booterstown on 24 Jun 1838. John was a
pharmaceutical chemist and apothecary and moved to Baggot Street in 1844. He
contributed to the Nation newspaper who had premises also on Merrion Row. In 1856
the Callans emigrated to Australia, where their daughter Margaret later married Charles
Gavan Duffy's eldest son by his first marriage.
