William (Willie) Payne born 9 Jul 1855 son of Thomas and Anne Payne. His father was a
shoeing smith at Melton, Mowbray and was also a constable of the town. William was
the Inn Keeper of Flying Childers Inn. He dealt in Hunters from the Swan and Salmon
stables and was later a livery stable keeper. He married Louise Sturgess on 7 May 1883
at Melton Mowbray. Louise was the second daughter of John Sturgess, a confectioner
& maltster and Elizabeth Wakerley of Melton. They were living at Kirby Bellars in 1891
and had moved to Scalford Road, Melton by 1901. By 1921 they were living at 16, Park
Road, Melton Mowbray and in 1925 Willie retired. He hunted with the Quorn and
Belvoir packs right up to 1932 despite a bad fall in 1926. William died 12 Jun 1932 at
the War Memorial Hospital, Melton and the funeral was to Kirby Bellars. He left 6K in
personal estate. Probate was to his son Arthur.
1 John William Payne born 23 Sep 1885 at Kirby Bellars. He joined the army in
1905 and married Elsie Grace Warner 21 Apr 1910 at Melton Parish Church.
Elsie was from Melton and the daughter of Frederic Warner. John was an
engineer’s assistant and also assisted his father at the livery stables. In 1921
they were living at 90 Scalford Road, Melton Mowbray with their two daughters.
John died in 1949.
2 Arthur Payne born 1887 at Kirby Bellars was an engineer, AM Inst. BE.
He worked at the motor works in Melton, Mowbray in Leicester. He married
Gertrude Jane Leader in 1909 in London. Jane was the daughter of Walter
Leader of Nottingham Road. Arthur was an engineer and worked for the
Dublin Motor Company in 1917. He lived at Roebuck House from 1920 to 1921
and was an automobile agent for the King 8 Cylinder with premises at 43
Dawson Street from 1918 to 1920, (the King was an American automobile built
by the King Motor Car Company in Detroit, Michigan from 1911 to 1923, and in
Buffalo, New York in 1923). They had returned to England by 1926 and Arthur
became a garage proprietor of Scalford Road. He was a freemason and Jane’s
brother was junior town warden of Melton Mowbray in 1936. He underwent
an operation at Melton Hospital in 1936 and died in hospital six weeks later on
30 Oct 1936. The funeral took place at Kirby Bellars. Gertrude put Scalford
House up for sale in 1943 as she was leaving the area.
