Michael J O’Neill born circa 1880 in Co Tipperary son of John O’Neill, a farmer. He
married Jane Broe* on 29 Jan 1923 at St Andrew’s Church, Dublin. Both gave their
address as 58 Fleet Street and Marian Flynn was a witness. Janie, only daughter of
John Broe and Anne Howlett of Monart Mills, Enniscorthy was the widow of Patrick
Joseph Ryan of 49 St Lawrence Road, Clontarf. Patrick originally from Wexford was
a publican of 58 Fleet Street (now the Oliver St John Gogarty pub). Michael
purchased No 1 Suffolk Street in 1927 from Paul Hogan. In 1932 he purchased No
2 Suffolk Street for £3800 and spent a further £4,200 on improvements to the two
premises. Jane died 15 Feb 1926 at Fitzwilliam Street late of 131 Strand Road,
Sandymount.
Michael O’Neill secondly married Marian Nolan** on 26 Apr 1933 at Monkstown RC
Church. Marian was the daughter of John Nolan, a farmer and the widow of John
Flynn. Marian was resident at The Cottage, Monkstown and Michael was a wine
merchant of 2 Suffolk Street. In 1933 they moved to Park Cottage, Sandyford (later
known as Lisieux Hall). In 1939 his stepson Peter J Flynn of Tanham & Sons,
solicitors bought the residence Glencairn and 175 acres in trust for Michael O’Neill
for 8K. Michael O'Neill Limited of 1-2 Suffolk Street was set up on Tuesday the
31 Mar 1953. Marian was the licensee of the pub which was still known as Flynns in
1946. In 1955 Marian agreed to sell Flynn’s restaurant to Hotels (Eire) Ltd and was
sued by them as she pulled out of the contract due to an overrun on the cost of
repairs that had been agreed. Glencairn was sold to the British Government for use
as the ambassadors residence in 1956. Marian died on 26 Nov 1957 at 96 Leeson
Street, late of Glen na Carrig, Brennanstown Road. Her funeral mass was held at
Foxrock and she was buried at Deansgrange. Michael died 30 May 1982 and was
buried with Marian. No issue found.
*Jane Broe born 19 Nov 1882 at Slaney Street, Enniscorthy, Co Wexford. Janie was
the only daughter of John Broe and Anne Howlett of Monart Mills. Jane was living with
her uncle Michael Howlett in 1901 in Enniscorthy. Jane married Patrick Ryan on
23 Sep 1912 at Enniscorthy Cathedral. Patrick was a merchant resident at Fleet Street
and the fourth son of Peter Ryan, a merchant of Enniscorthy. Patrick Joseph a publican
died 25 Aug 1921 at 49 St Lawrence Road, Clontarf aged 35. He was buried at Glasnevin,
his brother J Ryan, Uncle P Ryan and nephew P Ryan attended. No issue found.
**Marrianne Nolan married John Flynn 4 Sep 1912 at SS Michael & John’s on Essex
Quay. She was the youngest daughter of John Nolan of Bennekerry, Carlow, and was
resident at 58 South Great Georges Street. In 1901 she was working as a bookkeeper.
John was a publican of 1 & 2 Townsend Street and the youngest son of Peter Flynn of
Cartown, Co Louth. John born in co Louth circa 1877 was living with his sister Catherine
at 1-2 Townsend Street and was a grocer/publican. Pub seems to have been known as
Flynn’s Pub. John sold the pub for £5,500 and was vacant was vacant by 1920. He
purchased 28 Fleet Street and applied for a licence in 1921. John Joseph died on
9 Jun 1921 at 73 St Lawrence Road, Clontarf leaving a widow and son. Funeral held at
St John’s and he was buried at Glasnevin. Marian was the licensee and the pub was still
known as Flynns in 1946. In 1955 Marian agreed to sell Flynn’s restaurant to Hotels (Eire)
Ltd and was sued by them as she pulled out of the contract due to an overrun on the
cost of repairs that had been agreed.
1 Peter John Flynn on son born 1 Apr 1914 at Townsend Street. He was a solicitor
resident at Park Cottage, Sandyford and married Mary Josephine O’Neill on
14 Jun 1939 at St Columba’s Church, Glasnevin. Mary was a solicitor and
resident at Iona Road, Glasnevin. She was the daughter of Michael J O’Neill,
solicitor. They went to Paris on their honeymoon. Peter later went into practice
on his own with offices at D’Olier Chambers.
