O'Meara (Church of Ireland)
Jeremiah O'Meara was the first of this family name to live at Newtown House. He is said to have
inherited the house from Edward Murphy of Trinity College who is described variously as his uncle or
as the uncle of a Miss Murphy who was the reputed mother of Jeremiah's son Barry Edward O''Meara
(see below). A search of the records revealed only one marriage for Jeremiah O'Meara – to Catherine
Harpur in 1781. They had at least four children. Hely Fitzpatrick was born in 1782 and died in 1817.
He was described as Church of Ireland on the birth record. Charles Stanhope, born in 1784, had a very
successful army career with his promotions and actions reported in the press frequently. Barry Edward,
born in 1786, was famous as surgeon to Napoleon. He married twice and died in 1836 erysipelas. He is
buried in Paddington. Charlotte, the youngest of the four, was born in 1790 – see below.
Jeremiah converted to the Established Church in 1775 and shortly afterwards received a grant of arms
in recognition of his successful (army) action against anti-crown forces in the north of Ireland. He later
took up a career in law. It appears that he died intestate in 1804 although no death record has been
located by this writer. A memorial document dated 1821 refers to Catherine as the widow of Jeremiah
O'Meara while showing the family still at Newtown House. The Freeman's Journal reports that “The
beautiful and accomplished Charlotte” was married in 1815 in Monkstown Church to William Deane of
Castle Street, a pharmacist, by her neighbour Rev Sir Harcourt Lees of Blackrock House. The marriage
record however indicates that the celebrant was the Rev William Jew. It is William Deane who is
recorded as owner in the Tithes Applotment book 1826. Charlotte died in 1835 in Newtown House and
William's death is recorded as 1844 in Canada. As William Hodgens can be placed in Newtown House in
1835 (see below), it can be inferred that William Deane sold the house after Charlotte died and then
departed for Canada.
