Edward O’Brien baptised at the Pro Cathedral on 3 Nov 1807 son of Michael* and Margaret
O’Brien. He studied medicine and was a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. He married
Anna Maria (Ellen) Brady 29 May 1838 at St Andrew’s Westland Row. They lived at St
Brendan's, Leinster Terrace, Rathmines and attended SS Mary and Peters. He was a
supporter of O’Connell and a generous benefactor to the Repeal Association and numerous
charities. He was also on the building committee of the Retreat Centre at St Paul’s in 1859.
Ellen died 2 Oct 1868 at St Brendan's Rathmines. Francis died on 28 Jan 1869 and left 14K in
personal estate. A special mass was celebrated in March 1869 for the repose of his sole at
The Passionate Church in Harold’s Cross. On that evening 61 Loaves and 61 lbs of beef we
distributed (representing his age) to the Night Asylum, the Vincent de Paul, the Poor Clare's
and other charities. In 1871 the house St Brendan’s was let and the furniture make by Patrick
Beakey of Dublin was put up for sale.
1 Elizabeth Mary O’Brien eldest daughter born 20 Mar 1839 at Leinster Terrace,
Rathmines. took the holy habit in December 1870. She professed a nun of the Holy
Redeemer in December 1871. Sister Mary Paul of the Cross died 30 Oct 1894 at the
Convent of St Alphonsus, Drumcondra, Dublin.
2 John Hervey Archer O’Brien eldest son born 13 Apr 1840 at Leinster Terrace
baptised at Rathmines. He was a solicitor and was living with his father at St
Brendan’s, Rathmines in 1869 and by 1874 he was living st St Lorcan’s Howth. He
married Bertha Nash on 23 Apr 1876 at St James’ Church, Spanish Place, London.
Bertha born 7 Apr 1843 was the youngest surviving daughter of Daniel and Sarah
Nash of 4 York Gate, Regents Park, London. They lived at St Itas from 1888 to 1912.
John died at at 67 Upper Leeson street late of St Itas on 5 Jul 1898 and was buried at
Glasnevin. Their five children were all alive in 1911. Bertha died 13 Aug 1918 at 37
Sydney Avenue, Blackrock and was buried at Glasnevin.
1 Ita Mary Archer O’Brien born 31 Mar 1877 at 4 Agincourt Terrace, Belfast,
Co Antrim married Bernard James Mac Donnell on 26 Apr 1906 at
Booterstown Church. Bernard from England was a private secretary living
at Gardiner Street and was the son of John Joseph MacDonell, an engineer.
They were living at Sorrento Road Dalkey in 1911 and they had no children.
2 Bertha Maud Archer O’Brien born 18 Jun 1878 at St Lorcan’s Howth became
a nun. Mother Bertha died at the convent of the Sacred Heart, Brighton on
28 Feb 1940.
3 Francis Gerrard Archer O’Brien born 11 Jan 1880 at 36 Lower Gardiner St,
Dublin He enlisted 2nd Lieutenant, The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers died
2 Feb 1923 at Sydney Avenue, Blackrock.
4 Cecelia Mary Archer O’Brien born 1 Jul 1882 at 36 Lower Gardiner Street,
Dublin a spinster in 1906.
5 Agnes Muriel Bernard Helen Archer O’Brien born 4 Hume Street, Dublin on
18 Jan 1884.
3 Margaret Archer O’Brien baptised at Rathmines 16 Dec 1841 died 26 Jun 1860 at St
Brendan’s, Rathmines.
4 Anna Maria Agnes Bernard O’Brien baptised 28 Apr 1843 at Rathmines. As second
surviving daughter she married John O’Neill at St Paul’s (Church of the Passionists),
Harold’s Cross on 8 Jul 1868. John was an engineer from Belfast and Ballyholme , Co
Down and was the second son of James O’Neill of Stewartstown, Co Tyrone. Anna
was a widow by 1875 living at 15 Richmond Avenue Fairview.
5 Susanna Maria O’Brien baptised 22 Aug 1844 at Rathmines.
6 Michael J O’Brien baptised 23 Feb 1846 at Rathmines had left Ireland by 1870.
7 Francis Edward O’Brien third son baptised Jul 1847 at Rathmines went to St Louis,
Missouri. He died there on 12 Jun 1873.
8 Thomas Vincent O’Brien born circa 1850. As youngest surviving son he died
30 Jun 1874 at Grays Hospital, Matzlewig, Pietermaritzburg, Umgungundlovu,
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Probate to his brother John initially and then to his
sister Anna.
9 Maria O’Brien baptised 6 Oct 1851 at Rathmines died on 26 Dec 1861 at St
Brendan's, Rathmines.
*Michael was the second cousin of James Hervey. James was a brewer of Mullingar and left
Michael a legacy in his will, which Francis Edward claimed in 1860. The legacy was the
interest from 10K and was to pass to Michael’s son on his death.
