William Nolan born circa 1755 married Sarah. In the early 1800’s he purchased a lease on an Inn
in Newrathbridge. It became known as the Newrath Bridge Hotel or Nolan’s Hotel. William died
on 11 Apr 1830 and was buried at Wicklow Hill graveyard. His sons took over the running of the
hotel. The interest in the lease of the hotel and boarding house along with 40 acres was put up
for sale in 1840 by J Nolan and it was purchased by John Hunter. It became Hunter’s Hotel and
is still owed by the Hunter family today. Sarah died on 15 Sep 1842 and was buried with her
husband.
1 William Nolan born circa 1790. He qualified MRCS in England in 1819 and LRCSI in
1829. He was based at Tullow County Infirmary before working as Surgeon to the
County infirmary and Gaol in Wicklow. He later worked at Wicklow Fever Hospital. He
married Elinor and lived at Leitrim Place, the Murrough, Wicklow. Elinor died
21 Dec 1852 aged 57. William died 6 Sep 1874 and his was buried with his wife at
Wicklow Hill graveyard.
1 William Nolan eldest son born circa 1816. He attended Trinity College and
worked as a surgeon with the West India Packet Company. He founded
Wicklow Fever Hospital in 1834 together with John Perrin and died
26 Jan 1870 at Leitrim Place.
2 George Nolan, third son was a merchant. He married Lucy Blood in 1853 and
died at St Vincent’s Hall, Clifton, Bristol on 18 Jun 1878. Lucy died in 1881.
2 Margaret Nolan born circa 1793 married Mr Farrell and died 21 Feb 1843.
3 James Nolan born circa 1795 was a merchant. He married Elizabeth and they lived
at Leitrim House, The Murrough, Wicklow. Elizabeth died 31 Mar 1857 aged 49 and
James died 15 May 1868.
1 Elizabeth Nolan only daughter married Rev William Simpson of Queenstown on
9 Feb 1866 at the Presbyterian Church, Wicklow. Rev William died in 1897.
2 William Nolan, eldest son born circa 1828 worked at the National Bank in
Wicklow. He married Catherine Bleckley 4 May 1858 at the Scott's Church,
Adelaide Road, Dublin. Kate was the eldest daughter of Rev John Bleckley,
Minister of the First Presbyterian Church, Monaghan and later minister at
Wicklow. William died 2 Sep 1870 and was buried in the family grave at Wicklow
Hill.
1 Thomas Henry Nolan born 1870 died 25 Aug 1870 and was buried in the
family grave at Wicklow Hill graveyard.
3 John Nolan born circa 1829 was a Wicklow Town Commissioner. He died a
bachelor in 1911 at 13 Leitrim Place late of Marlton.
4 James Nolan a merchant died a bachelor on 15 Dec 1867 at South King Street.
4 Richard Nolan born circa 1796 son of William and Sarah Nolan of Newrath bridge. He
was living at Seaview House, Newrath-bridge, Co Wicklow and married Christiana Grey
in July 1828. Christiana was the second daughter of John Gray of Leabeg, near Newcastle,
Co Wicklow and his wife Mabella. He and his brother James ran Newrath-bridge Hotel
until 1840. They lived at Burton Hall from 1853 to 1858 and moved to 40 Wellington
Road in 1859. Richard was in partnership with James Perrin and they had a corn store
and Coal yard at Wicklow town main street. He looked to develop a house or a number
of houses on Wellington Road with architect John Louch in the 1850’s. Christiana died
10 Jul 1868 aged 69 at 8 Wellington Road and was buried at Wicklow Churchyard.
Rirchard died 20 Feb 1882 at 8 Wellington Road and was buried with his wife. Their house
later became the Japanese Embassy.
1 Adelaide Nolan born circa 1831 in Co Wicklow. She was living at 8 Wellington
Road in 1883 when she was elected a governess of the Royal City of Dublin
Hospital. She was living at Wellington Road in 1901 and 1911 and died a spinster
there on 24 Dec 1919.
2 William John Nolan eldest son born circa 1833. He was a merchant and coal
supplier winning a contact for the Wicklow Workhouse in 1862 to supply 250 ton
of Whitehaven coals. He married Anna Maria Eleanor Henry on 19 Nov 1870 at
Monkstown Church. Anna was resident at Ballybrack and the daughter of
Edward Henry, a lead smelter a silver refiner of Holywell, Bryntirion, Flintshire and
his wife Mary Jenkins. William was a Town Commissioner of Wicklow and on the
Vestry, being Church warden in 1873. He died from pneumonia on 15 Apr 1875 at
Seaview House Wicklow and was buried at Wicklow Hill Graveyard. Anna died
24 Feb 1877 aged 28 and was buried with her husband.
1 Mabella Mary Nolan born 6 Mar 1872 at Wicklow was a governor of the Royal
Hospital died a spinster at 8 Wellington Road on 3 Mar 1948 and left 18K in
personal estate. She was buried at Deansgrange.
2 Christiana Ellen Edith (Edith) Nolan born 29 Dec 1873 at Wicklow was a
governor of the Royal Hospital and Hon Sec of the Rathdown & Pembroke
district branch of the YWCA. She lived with her aunts at Wellington Road.
She died a spinster at 8 Wellington Road on 18 Nov 1962 and left 15K in
personal estate, 3K of which was given to various charities. She was buried
with her sister in Deansgrange.
3 Annie Nolan born circa 1835 in Co Wicklow was a governor of the Royal Hospital
living at 8 Wellington Road in 1901 died a spinster at Wellington Road on 3 May 1931.
4 Mabella Sara Nolan, youngest daughter married Robert Leake on 7 Jun 1859 at St
Peter’s Church. Robert of Grosvenor Terrace, Higher Broughton, Manchester was
an engraver and the son of Robert Leake. Mabelle Sarah died 9 Feb 1863 at Nice.
