Alexander Nesbit born circa 1853 in County Antrim son of William Nesbitt, draper. He was an
apprentice to Arnotts in 1867. He married Elizabeth George on 2 Aug 1881 at Belfast. Elizabeth
was the daughter of Gabriel George, a merchant. Arnott & Co on Henry Street burned down
overnight on 4 May 1894. He was managing director of Arnott & Co, Drapers in 1905 and
became chairman in 1909 after the death of Robert Wallace. They lived at Breffni in Dalkey and
Alex retired in 1838. Elizabeth died at Breffni, Dalkey on 15 Sep 1936 and was buried at
Deansgrange. Alex died at Breffni Dalkey on 7 Apr 1941 and left 51K in personal estate. He left
his property Ballytrensna, 17 Convent Road to his chauffeur; James O’Neill and 100 to his
housekeeper Madge Fitzgerald. He was buried with his wife at Deansgrange.
1 George Edward Nesbitt born 28 May 1882 at 4 Blessington Terrace, Drumcondra
attended St Andres College. He was a physician and married Madeline Collins on
17 Dec 1912 at St Andrews Church of Ireland, Dublin. Madeline was the daughter of
Alfred Tennison Collins, a director of Hibernian Bank. George was on the board
of Stillorgan Convalescent Home and a visiting physician to Harcourt Street Hospital.
He retired form practice in 1930 and they moved to Elgin Road. George died on
7 Aug 1948 and Aylesbury Road was buried at Deansgrange.

Pakenham Walsh on 25 Apr 1941 at Dalkey Parish Church.
2 Dorothy Julian Nesbitt born 23 Jan 1918 at 71 St Stephen’s Green married Gilbert
Pollard on 1 July 1941 at St Bartholomew’s Church, Clyde Road.
2 William Nesbitt born circa 1884 a tobacco merchant in 1911 took over as chair of Arnotts
in 1938 when his father retired. He married Agnes Elizabeth Stodart on 27 Apr 1912 at the
Presbyterian Church on Adelaide Road. Agnes died at Aylesbury Road on 27 Oct 1959 and
William died 1978. Both are buried at Deansgrange.
1 Ronald Stodart Nesbitt born 19 Mar 1913 at Baggot Street married Eleanor Law
Heuston on 19 Sep 1939 at St Anne’s Church, Dublin.
3 Alexander Ewing Nesbitt born 8 Dec 1885 at 49 Drumcondra Road. He attended Trinity
College Dublin and received a commission in 1915 and served with the Royal Engineers
during WW1. He married Mabel Violet Taylor on 10 Dec 1919 at the Methodist Church in
Kingstown. Mabel was the daughter of William Edward Taylor, a merchant and JP and was
living at Gortinor, Monkstown at the time of her marriage. He was a Major, a director of
Arnotts and they were living at Dunamase on Cross Avenue in 1941 and Waltham Terrace
in 1946. He died at the Meath Hospital, Balorney, Gordon Avenue, Foxrock on 19 Feb 1970
and was buried at Deansgrange. Mabel died in 1984 and was buried with her husband and
son.
1 Maurice George Edward Nesbitt born circa 1920 was a company director and died
a bachelor on approximately 18 Mar 1964 from suffocation at 2 Park Villas,
Stillorgan and was buried at Deansgrange.
4 Robert Wallace Nesbitt fourth son born25 Jul 1894 at Drumcondra Road, Dublin became a
physician and enlisted in the Royal Navy. He married Ethelreda Mary Frances Coolican in
March 1921 in London. Ethelreda was the daughter of Edward Coolican of Ballina, Mayo.
The couple had a son and a daughter. He was a Surgeon Commander in the Royal Navy.
He died on active service on 6 Sep 1941 onboard the HM Hospital Ship Maine and was
interred Hadra Military Cemetery, Alexandria.
5 Sydney Maurice Nesbitt born 13 Nov 1897 at Breffni, Dalkey was educated Portora Royal
School. He was a dispatch rider during WW1 in France & Belgium. He married Ethel
Hargrave in 1925 at Christ Church, Kingstown. Ethel was the daughter of John Hargrave,
engineer. He was MD of William Ruddell Ltd, a tobacco products manufacturer. They
lived at Avoca Lodge from 1941 to 1952 and had at least two children. He was a director
of Arnotts in 1941. He died on 29 May 1955 at Nutgrove, Merrion Avenue and Ethel died at
Nutgrove, Mount Merrion Avenue on 12 Nov 1966. Both are buried at Deansgrange.
