Thomas Neary son of Denis Neary, grocer of Patrick Street and Elizabeth Kearney. Thomas was a
grocer of 6 Rathmines Road and married Mary Agnes McAuley on 18 Sep 1888 at the Catholic
University Church (Harrington Street). Mary was the resident at 10 Adelaide Road, and the
daughter of Richard McAuley, grocer and baker and his wife Catherine Connolly. He bought No 1
Chatham Street and part of 63 Grafton Street which had been run as the Gaiety and Chatham bar
by James Henry Casserly. He sold his licensed house at 36 & 37 Townsend Street to concentrate
on the Chatham Street business. By 1895 it was rebranded ae Neary’s and had two entrances
on Chatham Street, and two on Tangier Lane. He provided committee rooms for clubs,
particularly cycling and athletic clubs. He catered outdoor events including the RDS show in
Ballsbridge and the Motor Car Show as well as providing licensed bars for Balls from the Town
Hall in Kingstown to Shillelagh. He was also a wine and spirit wholesale merchant and in 1899
applied for a licence to sell liquor at The Curragh racetrack. By 1911 the family were living at
Dalkey Avenue and had 7 children all of whom had survived. He was catering to the
Punchestown races and Powerstown Park races in 1913. In the 1920’s he was catering the
Phoenix Park and Baldoyle Races. They were living at 16 Palmerston Park by 1923 and Mary
played golf at Milltown. Mary died 20 Dec 1931 and was buried at Deansgrange. Thomas died on
2 Jun 1933 and his funeral mass was held at Cullenswood Church, and he was buried at
Deansgrange with his wife.
1 John Joseph Neary born 20 Aug 1889 at 23 Rathgar Road attended Banagher Boarding
School. It joined the Jesuits and celebrated his father’s funeral mass at Cullenswood.
2 Mary Josephine (Myna) Neary born 15 Aug 1891 at 23 Rathgar Road married Peter
Lemass on 1 Jul 1924 at Cullenswood Church. Peter was a doctor and the son of
Joseph Lemass, merchant. Their son Peter became a priest and was the writer and
presenter of RTE’s Radharc series.
3 Leo Thomas Neary born 10 Dec 1892 at 23 Rathgar Road was a boarder at Banagher
School in 1901. He moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina and managed the Chapadmantal
Stud farm for Senor Martinez de Hoz. He enlisted and served in France during WW1.
He married Kathleen Hickey at Westminster Cathedral on 7 Sep 1931. Kathleen was
the daughter of Patrick Hickey of Manchester. He took over the business in Chatham
Street and they lived at Park Avenue in Sandymount. In 1935 he was appointed
Consul to Guatemala and was resident at Dunstaffnage from 1940. He died
11 Dec 1945 at Dunstaffnage aged 53 and left nearly 37K in personal estate. Kathleen
died in 1978 and was buried with her husband and son. Neary’s on Chatham Street
was put up for sale in 1956. It was purchased by Joseph Hardy for £15,100 and is still
in the ownership of the Hardy family.
1 Denis Patrick Neary died at Dunstaffnage in 1954 aged 19 and was buried at
Deansgrange.
4 Patricia Mary Neary born 19 Mar 1895 at 23 Rathgar Road attended Loretto in
Rathfarnham. She married Edward F Barry on 29 Apr 1931 at the Church of the Holy
Name. Edward, a merchant from Ballinahoun, Fermoy was the son of Barry, merchant.
Patricia died at Ballinahoun on 13 Aug 1937. Edmond died 20 Mar 1942.
5 Carmel Mary Neary born 17 Jul 1897 at 23 Rathgar Road married Eugene Sheehy on
20 Jun 1923 at Cullenswood Church. Eugene was a barrister and the son of David
Sheehy, MP and Elizabeth McCoy, from Loughill, Co Limerick. Eugene was the legal
officer to the Irish Free State army. The couple had two children. Eugene was later
a judge and published a memoir, May it please the Court, in 1951. In 1954 he was
appointed chairman of the board of assessors of military pensions under the Military
Service Pensions Act, 1934. Eugene died 23 Oct 1958 at the Mater Nursing Home late
of 31 Oatlands Drive, Rathgar. He was buried at Deansgrange. Carmel died 30 Jun 1970
and was buried with her husband and brother Thomas.
6 Thomas Joseph Neary born 31 Oct 1900 at 5 Belgrave Park attended Clongowes. He
was a chartered accountant and died a bachelor on 23 Sep 1966. He was buried at
Deansgrange.
7 Brendan Joseph Neary born 1 Feb 1905 at Harcourt Street fl 1933.
