Christopher Myers born in Lancashire son of John Myers was baptised 16 Nov 1717 at
Cartmel, Cumbria. He was a master builder of Whitehaven employing apprentices in 1749.
He was an architect and by 1754 was in Ireland working on the harbour at Ballycastle, Co
Antrim and by 1765 he was based on the corner of Grafton Street, Dublin, close to College
Green. He was appointed architect to the Commissioners of the Barracks in 1766 and was
responsible for the design of the extension at The Royal Barracks (now Collins Barracks).
The extension included a ballroom. He was appointed architect to Trinity College in 1775
and in 1781 he was appointed to HM Board of Works. The Grafton Street House was put
up for long term let in 1880 and they moved to Monkstown and named the house
Myersville. Together with Lorenzo Nixon, he produced a map of Cork and its suburbs in
1774. He had property in Monkstown and Ranelagh, and with George Darley and John
Sproule he held the interest of the lands and house of Newtown Castle Byrne. He worked
closely with fellow architect Samuel Sproule of Holles Street and together submitted a
drawing for the Royal Exchange in 1769. He died 8 Jul 1789 at Monkstown and was buried
at Monkstown.
1 Elizabeth Myers only daughter born circa 1746 married Patrick Allen of
Castledobbs, Co Antrim on 19 Mar 1768 in the Parish of St Andrew, Dublin.
2 Graham Myers born circa 26 Apr 1746. He married Pleasance Cockrein of
Kesgrave, Suffolk in England on 21 Jul 1779 and they lived at 109 Grafton Street.
He was listed as an architect from 1779 to 1783 to the Ordnance, Battle Axe
Barracks. He took over as architect to Trinity College, Dublin after the death of his
father in 1789 and was the architect of Trinity Chapel in 1790/1. Graham died
18 Jan 1801 and was buried at Carrickbrennan, Monkstown. Pleasance died in
September 1809 at Woodbridge, and was buried at Kesgrave.
1 Emily Graham Myers born 1788 married Colonel Thomas Pogson on
27 Jun 1806 at Kesgrave, Suffolk. Thomas died in June 1835 aged 72 in
London and Emily died in London late of Kesgrave house in February 1836.
1 Graham Myers Pogson eldest son born circa 1813 died
31 Mar 1836 in Manchester Street.
2 Pleasance Myers second daughter married Captain William Carthew at
Kesgrave, Suffolk (the seat of George Pogson) in September 1803. William
was later an Admiral and died 21 Jul 1827 aged 69. The couple had no issue.
3 Jane Myers married Francis Waskett of Bloomsbury Square on 9 Nov 1815
at Kesgrave Church. In 1819 Francis, a solicitor assumed, under the
authority of the King’s sign manual, the name and arms of Myers, in addition
to his own family name and arms. They were living in London in 1841 and a
servant child Annette Meyers was living with them. In 1848 Annette Meyers
aged 26 was convicted of murder and sentenced to death, later commuted to
two years imprisonment and then transportation to Van Diemen's Land.* It
was rumoured that she was the lovechild of Francis Wascott Myers. Francis
died 9 May 1853 at Brook Green and Jane died in November 1858 and was
buried at Wanstead.
3 William Myers born circa 1750 in Whitehaven. He joined the 26th Regiment
of Foot and attained the rank of Lieutenant-General. He married Elizabeth
McEveres on 23 Aug 1779 in Boston. In 1798 he was appointed Commander
in Chief in the Southern District of Ireland. He was created Baronet in 1804.
He was Commander in Chief of the Leeward Islands and died 29 Jul 1805 in
Barbados. Elizabeth died 14 Dec 1814 at Oxford Row, London.
1 William James Myers only son born circa 1783 was with the
Coldstream Guards by 1800. He succeeded to the Baronetcy on the
death of his father in 1805. He was wounded at the Battle of Albuera
and died at Valverde on 7 May 1811.
2 Eliz Myers married William Erskin of Card Ross Perthshire. She
secondly married Captain James Blake of Belmont, Galway on
7 Aug 1808 at St Mary’s, Cheltenham.
4 Christopher Myers** born circa 1754 married Elizabeth Fulton circa 1774. He
was robbed and wounded on the South Circular Road in 1777. He was listed
as an architect in 1783 to the Ordnance, Battle Axe Barracks. He won a
premium for his design for the rebuilding of Ringsend Bridge in 1787. He was
executive clerk to Sir William Chambers, architect for some years and Chambers
gave him credit for the design of the theatre at Trinity College in 1780. In 1795
his residence was given as 177 Sassafras Street, Philadelphia. It is thought that
he may have worked for Samuel Blodget, who designed the First Bank, in
Philadelphia which is similar to the Royal Exchange in Dublin.
1 Jane Myers baptised at St Thomas’ on 14 Jun 1776.
5 Randle Myers married Elinor Daly on 8 Nov 1784 (ML) at St Mary’s, Dublin was a
builder of Blackrock. He a brigade major and presented with plate worth 100
guineas by all in the West Brigade of West Wicklow when he was living in
Monkstown in 1802. He died in Wicklow in 1805.
*Annette was convicted of murdering Henry Ducker, a soldier she had been seeing. He was of
a disreputable character who had a number of ladies in his life and possibly an estranged
wife. His lady friends gave him money but Annette was a poor servant so he suggested she
prostitute herself so as to pay him. She later married in Van Diemen's Land.
