John Murphy born circa 1803. He was foreman at Caffrey Copperworks in James' Street
and married Frances Kennedy in 1832. Frances was the daughter of James Marinus
Kennedy of Gloucester Terrace and Clondalkin. Frances, a dressmakes and her mother had
been abandoned by James Kennedy in 1816. Her mother was left destitute and was told by
the Kennedy family that her husband had got to France to avoid his creditors. John
Murphy took his mother in law into his care after his marriage. After the death of Mr Caffrey
John succeeded to the business. In 1843 he announced the opening of the first Irish Church
bell foundry having supplied joy bells to welcome the liberator at Clontarf. He was based at
137 James’ Street and his first commissions were for the Archbishop of Tuam and the Bishop
of Meath. Having put bells on show at the RDS he received numerous commissions including
a bell for the Abbot of Mount Melleray and another from the Bishop of Clonfert. By 1845 he
moved to 140 James’ Street and over the next 30 years he won numerous medals at the
Dublin, London and Paris Exhibitions and his bells had been installed all over Ireland
including Christ Church Cathedral Dublin in 1844/5 and others had been exported to the
Colonies and Australia including Christ Church Melbourne, and also to America and
Newfoundland. He also supplied the Great Northern Railway, London with bells including
the bell for the clock at King’s Cross Station. He received a commission from Benjamin
Guinness to replace three defective bells at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin. He liked to say
our ‘bells are ringing all over the world sounding the praises of Irish manufacturers’. In
1844 it was discovered that Frances's father was not in France but was a wealthy recluse
living in Dublin but he refused to meet his wife and daughter. Frances died on 23 May 1846
at 140 James' Street and was buried at Glasnevin. Her mother continued to live with her son
in law. In 1849 John took a case against James Kennedy and was awarded £150 for the
upkeep of his mother in law.
1 Mary Teresa Murphy eldest daughter born circa 1840. She married John Masterson
at St Catherine’ Roman Catholic Church in April 1860. John was a wine merchant of
Great 144 Britain Street corner of North Great Georges Street. He sold his
premises in 1863 and moved to Henry Street. He later purchased the Downshire
Arms Hotel in Blessington.
2 Thomas Murphy born circa 1841 was a bellfounder. He died a bachelor at
Montereau Lodge on 5 Jan 1879 and was buried at Glasnevin.
3 Elizabeth Murphy born circa 1841 died at a private hospital on Upper Pembroke
Street on 7 Aug 1909. She was the eldest surviving daughter, probate to her sister
Frances.
4 Frances Josephine Murphy baptised 9 Jun 1844 at St James’ married William Mahalm,
a merchant on 16 Aug 1862 at St Catherine’s Church. William was a Distiller of Dublin.
Elizabeth was a widow in 1901 living at Dartmouth Road and at Effra Road in 1911.

2 William John Joseph Mahalm born 24 Feb 1865 at 62 Thomas Street.
3 John Archibald Mahalm born 13 Oct 1866 at 62 Thomas Street died an infant.

in 1868.
5 Frances Sarah Mahalm born 7 Feb 1870 at Ashgrove Cottage, Rathmines.
6 Carolina Maria Mahalm born 11 Sep 1872 at Terenure Ville, Kimmage Road,
baptised at St Joseph’s, Terenure.
7 Ignatius Joseph John Mahalm born 22 May 1874 Terenure Ville, Kimmage Road,
baptised at St Joseph’s, Terenure. He died a bachelor on 9 Mar 1908 having
drowned in the Dodder near London Bridge Road.
8 Sarah Maria Cecilia born 10 Feb 1878 at Terenure Ville, Kimmage Road,
baptised at St Joseph’s, Terenure.
9 Beatrix Maria Josephina Mahalm on 17 Jun 1879 at Terenure Ville, Kimmage
Road, baptised at St Joseph’s, Terenure died same place in March 1893.
10 Angelina Maria Teresia Mahalm born 5 Jun 1881 at Terenure Ville, Kimmage
Road, baptised at St Joseph’s, Terenure.
11 Olivia Maria Agnes Mahalm born 1 Jul 1885 at Terenure Ville, Kimmage Road,
baptised at St Joseph’s, Terenure.
5 James Marinues (sic) Murphy baptised at St James’ on 15 June 1845.
In 1850 John took premises at 15 Thomas’ Street and he secondly married Caroline Mahalm
of 12 Thomas Street on 11 Aug 1860. John died 4 Feb 1879 at Montereau Lodge and left 90K
in personal estate and was buried at Glasnevin. A few years after John’s death the family
moved to Garville Avenue, Rathgar. The foundry was taken over by Martin O’Donell in 1883
who continued to trade as John Murphy & Son. Caroline died aged 18 Mar 1900 at St Jude’s,
Highfield Road aged 75.
6 Josephine Mary Murphy born circa 1861 married Thomas Francis O’Beirne on
30 Apr 1889 at the Church of the Three Patrons, Rathgar. Thomas was the son of
the late John O’Beirne of Croshea, Co Longford. Thomas was a JP and the governor
of Mullingar Lunatic asylum. He died 4 Sep 1898 aged 42 at Edgeworthstown,
Longford.
7 Caroline Mary Murphy born 8 May 1864 at 14 Thomas Street.
8 Sarah Mary Agnes (Poppie) Murphy born 4 Dec 1865 at 14 Thomas Street. She
married James O’Dowd Egan on 6 Jul 1892 at the Church of the Three Patrons,
Rathgar. James was with the Colonial Medial Service and based at Georgetown,
Demerara and the son of William Egan of Ballinrobe. They had eight children. Dr
Egan died 3 Sep 1953 at Mount Carmel aged 90.

9 John Joseph Laurence Murphy born 15 Nov 1870 at 14 Thomas Street. He was sworn
in as a solicitor of the High Court in 1894 having served his apprenticeship with D & T
Fitzgerald. He lived at Montereau Lodge and later at 4 Prince Albert Terrace, Bray
and had offices at 20 Suffolk Street, Dublin. He married Anne Pelly on 5 Nov 1906 at
St Mary’s Haddington Road. Anne was the daughter of Cornelius Pelly, JP of Etwall,
Lansdowne Road. They lived in Bray and were at Laxton, Bray from 1916. John died
as last surviving son at Laxton, Bray on 11 Oct 1948.

3 John Pelly Murphy 19 Mar 1909 at 4 Galtrim Road, Bray graduated Trinity
College. He was a solicitor and went to Hong Kong in 1936 as Crown solicitor.
He was a POW during the second world war in Japan. He was the Attorney
General in Zanzibar in 1950 and was appointed puisne judge to Kenya in 1956.

5 Colman Murphy second don born circa 1912 was a RAF officer and died on
active service on 17 Jun 1940.
