Oswald was born in Sankt Reinoldi Evangelisch, Dortmund, Westfalen, Prussia, Germany on
14 Feb 1879 and was baptised into the Lutheran faith. He qualified as an electrical engineer
and joined Siemens Schuckert in Berlin. He worked in China as manager of Siemens China Co,
Tientsln before coming to Ireland in 1927 as managing director of Siemens Schucker (Ireland)
Ltd. Siemens had been contracted to build Ireland’s first national hydro-electric station on the
Shannon now called Ardnacrusha Power Station. His business address was 43 O’Connell
Street. He retired in 1939. When Hitler was appointed German chancellor in January 1933,
approximately 500 Germans in Dublin joined the Nazi Party. Adolf Mahr was a Group leader
and submitted monthly reports on the political situation in Ireland. He was assisted in these
Nazi Party duties by Oswald.
Oswald was Mahr’s deputy in the Nazi Party’s ausland (foreign) organisation, which kept an
eye on Germans living abroad, enforced discipline among party members and produced
regular reports for Berlin. They lived at Summerville, Cross Avenue from 1933 to 1943.
Oswald died 18 May 1956 aged 77 at 10 Myrtle Park, Dun Laoghaire. Mary Elizabeth died
11 Dec 1959 at St Michael’s Hospital late of Myrtle Park. Both are buried at Deansgrange.
