William Moran born circa 1809 in Cork married Elizabeth Emilia Robertson on 17 Feb 1835 in Calcutta.
William was an owner/director of Messrs Moran and Co trading with India mainly in tea and indigo.
The Moran Tea Company commenced business in 1864 and developed two tea estates in Assam
known as Moran and Sepon.
They lived at St Edmundsbury, Lucan (now a psychiatric hospital) from 1866 to 1888. He was a JP, a
director of the Assam Railways Company Ltd in India and a member of the Oriental Club, Hanover
Square, London. Elizabeth died at Hollyrood Bray on 6 Aug 1880 and was buried at Glasnevin.
1 Charles Matthew Moran* born circa 1836. He was a captain in the 1st Regiment of the King's
Dragoon Guards and married Barbara Margaret Parsons at St Andrew's, Westland Row on
14 Jan 1869. Barbara was the youngest daughter of George Parsons of Cragbeg, Co
Limerick. Charles joined the Limerick City Militia and resigned his commission in 1876. He
died from elephantiasis on 8 May 1879 at Charleville House, Rathmines.

Edmond B Place at the Convent Church, Norwood, London on 15 Sep 1908.
Edmond was the eldest son of J A Place of New Ross, Co Limerick.

2 Emilia Jane Moran, eldest daughter born circa 1839 in India married Thomas Woodlock of
Dame Street, only son of Thomas Woodlock of Cork on 11 Jul 1865 at Lucan R C Church.
Thomas was a stockbroker. He was bankrupt in 1882 with liabilities of over 100K and their
house Mayfield on Herbert Road in Bray was put up for sale. The family moved to
Kensington in London and he exited bankruptcy in 1886. He continued to trade as a stock
broker and died 23 Jul 1919 in London aged 81at Copthall House (the Stock Exchange).
Emilia died 21 Dec 1920 and was buried with her husband at Hove.
1 Thomas Francis Woodlock born 1 Sep 1866 at St Edmundsbury, Lucan was a
journalist, author and editor of the Wall Street Journal. He was also an adviser to
President Coolidge and died in 1945.

Vale, Glamorganshire on 27 Aug 1878 in St Mary’s Lucan. John was a director of the
Shannon Fishery Company. The family lived at Corbally in Limerick and they had 8 children.
John died 30 Oct 1923 at Rosemount, New Ross and Mary died 24 Apr 1934 at Rosemount
and was buried at Glasnevin.

daughter of John Doherty of 61 Dominick Street. Stanislaus was living at 3 Mangoe Lane,
Calcutta in 1906 and May was living with her father. They get a mention in James Joyce's
Ulysses as 'Mesdames Gerald and Stanislaus Moran of Roebuck, the managing clerk of
Drimmie’s'. (The Drimmies from Scotland were insurance brokers of Sackville Street and lived
at Bellevue in Priesthouse). The family lived at Mooteeharie, Greystones from 1910 to 1915
and also had a residence at 55 Connaught Street, Hyde Park. Mary died 18 Feb 1928 at 7a
Belsize Park-gardens, Hampstead. Stanislaus died 24 Apr 1930 at the White Cottage, Caterham.
1 William Izod Noel Moran born 26 Dec 1885 born at 5 Louden Street, Calcutta was an
arts student. He died at Roebuck Hill, the home of his grandfather on 27 Apr 1906
from pneumonia and flu.
2 Gerald Charles Moran born 29 Aug 1888 at 61 Elm Gardens, London. He enlisted in
April 1913. He was a lieutenant of the 5th Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers. He died
from gas poisoning in a French Hospital on 26 May 1916. He is remembered on the
St Sever Cemetery Memorial, Rouen, France.
3 Gwendolyn Mary Delphine Moran born 18 Jul 1896 at 7 De Vesci Terrace, Kingstown.
She married Richard Buttery in London in 1920.
4 Norah Kathleen Mary Moran died 13 Dec 1898 at 7 De Vesci Terrace aged 4 months.
10 Gerald Aloysius Moran born 27 Oct 1852 in Calcutta. Gerald married Alicia Mary Concepta
Doherty at the Archbishop’s private oratory at Rutland Square on 8 Sep 1881 (registered at
Westland Row). Stanislaus Moran and Mary Doherty were the witnesses. Alicia was the
daughter of John Doherty of 61 Dominick Street. Gerald was based in London at the time
of his marriage and was a broker but was declared a defaulter upon the Stock Exchange in
1893. Gerald died 18 Feb 1899 late of 61 Elm Park Gardens, Fulham. Alicia moved back to
Dublin to live with her father at Dominick Street. After he died she moved to De Vesci
Terrace with her two daughters and two sons. She died at De Vesci Terrace on 10 Jul 1926.

London died circa 1963.

11 Norbert Louis Moran born circa 1855 graduated Trinity in 1877 and was called to the bar
in 1883 (3rd surviving son). He married Elizabeth Jane (Bessie) Thompson on 23 Sep 1890
at St Peter’s Winchester. Elizabeth was the only daughter of John Henry Thompson of the
Orchards, Longparish, Hants. They lived at 11 Uxbridge terrace, Leeson Park. Norbert a
widower died at Rosemount, New Ross on 27 Nov 1923.
William secondly married Ellen May Woolley of Swansea at the Royal Sardinian Chapel, Lincoln’s Inn
Fields on 25 Aug 1881. Ellen was the daughter of John S and Eleanor Wooley of Swansea. He was
71 and she was 21. The family sponsored prize givings at the local convent school and installed a
memorial window in St Mary’s in Lucan. St Edmundsbury was put up for sale in 1888 as William
was moving to London. The tea company failed in 1898 and was later acquired by Moran Tea Co
Ltd which was incorporated in England for that purpose. William died 13 Nov 1894, late of 65
Harrington Gardens, South Kensington and left 6K in personal estate in England and a further 3K in
Ireland. His executor was his son Norbert Louis Moran, solicitor. The Will was contested by the
children of his first wife as he left 40K to his young widow with revision to their child Henry. The
Judge found for the Will. His widow Ellen May Moran, of Mill Hill House, Barnes died in 24 Dec 1941
leaving 105K in personal estate.
12 Henry Moran born 1882 in London was a civil engineer living with his mother in Barnes in
1911. He was a retired civil engineer in 1941.
