John Montague Smyth eldest son of John Smyth of Cork married Ellen Charters on
22 Jul 1804 in Cork. John was an attorney and died circa 20 Aug 1837 at his home on South
Mall, Cork. Ellen died at on 17 Feb 1939 at her residence on York Terrace.
1 John Smyth eldest born circa 1808. John was a solicitor of 78 Mount Street and later
of 17 Eustace Street. He married Jane Fetherston H on 9 Feb 1839 at Ballymore
Church, Co Westmeath. Jane was the daughter of Theobald Fetherston H of
Mosstown, Co Westmeath and his wife Jane Barlow. Jane died 7 Jun 1847 at St
Aubyns, South Hill Avenue and was buried at Mount Jerome.
1 John Montague Smyth born 19 Dec 1839. As only son he died at
Springmount Co Dublin on 6 Jun 1846.
2 Mary Fetherston Smyth born 24 Nov 1840 at 78 Mount Street baptised at St
Stephen’s.
3 Jane Deane Smyth born 18 July 1842 baptised at St Stephen’s died from
Scarlatina on 5 Jul 1846.
4 Ann Frances Smyth born 1844 child baptised at St Stephen’s died from
scarlatina at Mount Street died 16 Jun 1846.
5 Catherine Isabella Smyth born 27 Oct 1845 at 78 Lower Mount Street baptised
at St Stephen’s.
6 Edward John Smyth born 28 Nov 1846 at 78 Lower Mount Street baptised at St
Stephen’s was admitted Kings Inn in 1862. He was an unmarried solicitor living
at Carysfort Avenue in 1901 and Anglesea Avenue, Blackrock in 1911.
John secondly married Maria Catherine Pittar on 6 Sep 1848 at SS Philip and James,
Bootestown. Maria was the daughter of Samuel John Pittar of South Hill House and his
wife Elizabeth Waring. Maria aged 25 died 12 Apr 1851 at St Aubyn's on South Hill
Avenue survived by infant children and was buried at Mount Jerome. John died
25 Feb 1891 at 2 Alma Road, Monkstown and was buried with his wives at Mount
Jerome.
7 Ralph Montague Smyth youngest son born circa 1850 was a lieutenant in the
63rd Foot and retired in 1872. He died a bachelor 30 Sep 1874 at Alma Road,
Monkstown.
2 William Montague Smyth born circa 1809. He got his doctorate of medicine from the
University of Glasgow in 1835. William MD, Surgeon & Accoucheur applied to become
dispensary doctor at Cork, the same year. William married Frances Grace Hay at
Douglas Church on 11 Oct 1845. Frances was the widow of W Hay and the daughter of
John Coote and they lived at Prospect Lodge, Ballintemple. Frances died 2 August 1878
and William died 18 Apr 1887 at 14 Victoria Terrace, Glenbrook, Cork. Both are buried
at St Mary’s Graveyard at Passage.
3 Eliza Minton Smyth eldest daughter born circa 1810 married William Littlejohn
O’Halloran of the 38 Regiment and son of General Joseph O’Halloran, CB and his wife
Frances Bayley at Christ Church in December 1831. They had at least two daughters
and three sons and moved to South Australia in 1840.
4 Francis Cotterell Smyth, 3rd son born circa 1814 admitted Kings Inn circa 1835. He was
a solicitor of 88 South Mall, Cork. He married Marianne Macdonnell on 4 Nov 1841 at
Timoleague Church. Marianne was the daughter of the Rev A Mcdonnell and the
granddaughter of the Rev Charles L Coughlan. He died circa 1868 and Marianne moved
to Tavistock Street, St Giles, London to live with her son Charles and died circa 1872.
1 Charles Coghlan Smyth born 8 Dec 1842 at South Mall, Cork. He got a direct
commission into the army at Chelsea in 1861 having attained 5965 marks in the
examination (1800 was the qualifying points). He attained the rank of Major in
1883.
2 Daughter Smith born 29 Apr 1844 at South Mall, Cork.
3 Frances Charters Smyth youngest daughter born circa 1856 died in London on
24 Jan 1870.
4 Thomas C Smyth born circa 1858 living with his mother at St Giles, London in
1871.
5 Mary Montague Smyth born circa 1819 married Thomas Spring on 8 Aug 1840 at St
Luke’s Church. Thomas was with the 24th Regiment and was the fourth son of Lieut
Col William Collis Spring of the 58th Regiment and his wife Ann Carter. Thomas later
served with the 83rd Regiment. Mary died 30 Nov 1901 at Cornwall Road, London.
Thomas died 22 Jul 1910 aged 94 at the home of his son in law Dr Hargrave, Denny
Street, Tralee, Co Kerry.
1 Mary Montague Spring born 30 Jan 1848 at Clonmel married Dr Abraham Addison
Hargrave. They had no issue.
2 Isabelle Frances Spring born 1 Jun 1850 at Poonah, East Indies.

his practice at 78 Mount Street in 1844 and at 16 Andrew’s Street in 1851. He married
Elizabeth Charlotte Barlow 2 Apr 1846 at Birr Parish Church. Charlotte was the
daughter of John Barlow of Parsonstown. Ralph died 3 Dec 1857 at The Park, Queenstown.
