Mitford Family of Redesdale, Kilmacud
Sir John Freeman Mitford 1st Baron Redesdale younger son of John Mitford of Exbury, Hampshire and
Philadelphia, daughter of Willey Reveley of Newton Underwood, Northumberland.
The title of Baron Redesdale in the County of Northumberland was created in 1802 for Sir John Mitford
the Speaker of the House of Commons 1801-1802 and Lord Chancellor of Ireland 1802-1806. John
married Lady Frances Perceval daughter of John Perceval the 2nd Earl of Egmont and sister of Prime
Minister Spencer Perceval in 1803. He took the additional name Freeman in 1809 by Royal Licence.

1 Hon Frances Elizabeth Mitford born circa 1804 in Dublin and died 07.11.1866 aged 62 years at
Batsford Park.
2 John Thomas Mitford only son born 09.09.1805 in Dublin educated at Eton and New College,
Oxford. John was created Earl of Redesdale in 1877. He died unmarried in 1886. At this point
both titles became extinct. John left his substantial estates to his 1st cousin twice removed Sir
Algernon Freeman-Mitford.
3 Catherine Mitford born 10.04.1807 and baptised at St Marylebone Parish Church and died
young circa 1811.
4 Elizabeth Mitford died young circa 1810.
Sir Algernon (Barty) Freeman Mitford 1st Cousin twice removed of John Thomas Mitford born 24.02.1837
at St George’s, Hanover Square worked for the foreign office during the 1860’s in Russia, Japan and China.
He married Lady Clementine Helen Gertrude Ogilvy on 31.12.1874 at Cortachy Castle, Scotland. After
inheriting the Batsford Park estate in 1886 Sir Algernon moved to the Cotswolds. He demolished the old
Georgian mansion and built the house that stands there today. He landscaped the entire estate being
influenced by what he had seen in the Orient. In 1902 the Redesdale title was revived and he became
Baron Redesdale. Sir Algernon died on 17.08.1916 at Batsford Park and Clementine died on 30.04.1932 at
Otterburn, Northumberland.
Eldest Son David Bertram Ogilvy Freeman Mitford, 2nd Baron Redesdale born 13.03.1878 married Sydney
Bowles on 06.02.1904 at St George’s, Hanover Square. David inherited the Batsford Park estate in 1916
following the death of his father. David died on 17.03.1958 at Otterburn, Northumberland. Sydney died
on 25.05.1963 at Argyll, Scotland. David and Sydney were the parents of the prominent Mitford sisters.
