George Mitchell born circa 1797 in Scotland. He married Margaret Crighton circa 1824 and
was a tobacconist of 20 Lower Sackville Street by 1821. George a self proclaimed Scotchman
was called as a witness in a court case in 1830. He was on the committee of the Scottish
Benevolent Society of St Andrew. He was called to be a juror in the trial of Daniel
O'Connell in January 1844 but on the morning of the trial a medical certificate was handed in
stating he would be unable to attend. The lived at Sea View, Clontarf from 1844 to 1846.
George died on 20 Oct 1852 at Upper Rathmines and was buried at Mount Jerome. The day
after he was laid to rest, a plate glass window in the newly renovated shop at 20 Sackville
Place was smashed. Margaret died 6 Sep 1865 at Hopeton Rathgar and was buried with her
husband.
1 Mary Mitchell only daughter born circa 1825 married Edward Samuel Inderwick of
New Kensington, London at Clontarf on 26 Jan 1847. George Mitchell, was witness for
husband and William B Kirkpatrick was witness for wife. Edward was the eldest son
of John Inderwick, ivory turner and pipe importer of Princes Street, Leicester Square
and his wife Mary Ann. His father was also the property developer of Kensington Grove
and New Kensington. Mary died at 2 Canning Place, Kensington on 18 Mar 1858.
1 George Inderwick born 1849 in Kensington. George married Matilda Tooth on
13 Jun 1876 at St James’ Piccadilly. Matilda was the daughter of Arthur Tooth of
Cumberland Terrace, Regent’s Park. George was an importer & manufacturer of
Meerschaum & other pipes. Goerge, his wife and two daughters were living at 1
Selwood Place, Kensington in 1881. George died 5 Mar 1907 at Portman Square
and is buried at Kensal Green. He left 10k in personal estate. Matilda Inderwick
died 15 Feb 1924 Aged 77 years.
2 Henry John Inderwick baptised 31 July 1851 at Clontarf. He was a tobacco
merchant and married Isabella Emily Corbett on 30 Nov 1876 at St Luke’s Church,
Redcliffe Square. Isabella was the elder daughter of William Corbett and
Isabella Crum of The Grove, Boltons, South Kensington and also of Westgate on Sea,
Thanet. Emily died in 1888 and is buried at Brompton Cemetery. Henry died
26 Dec 1923 and is buried at Putney Vale, London.
3 Alfred Inderwick baptised 1852 in Kensington baptised at Clontarf on 16 Jun 1853.
He attended Albion House School and was a solicitor’s clerk living with his father
and step mother in 1871. He was a solicitor and married Adele Rubini Jervis at the
Servite Catholic Church, South Kensington on 29 Sep 1880. Adele was the youngest
daughter of John Swynfen Jervis of Queen Elm, Brompton. Alfred died 1895 in
Chelsea.
4 Charles Inderwick born 24 Sept 1853 at Moira Lodge, Clontarf baptised at Clontarf.
5 Florence Margaret Inderwick born 1855 in Kensington. She married John Henry
Jaques in March 1878 at St Luke’s Redcliffe Square, South Kensington. John was
a wine merchant and they were living at 4 York Villas, Lewisham in 1871 and at 26
Bellevue Road, Battersea in 1901.
Edward, a wine merchant secondly married Susan Pearse on 27 Jun 1858 at St Mary’s
Battersea. Susan was the daughter of Joseph Pearse. They lived at Montpelier House,
Tregunter Road, South Kensington from 1869. Edward died 21 Jul 1899 aged 77 at 26
Tregunter Road and is buried at Brompton. Susan died at Montpelier House on
17 Feb 1907.
2 George Mitchell born circa 1827 was a JP and tobacconist of Sackville Street. He joined
the committee of the Scottish Benevolent Society of St Andrew on the death of his father.
He married Janet Cotton at 40 York Place, Edinburgh on 14 Jun 1855. Janet was the
youngest daughter of George Cotton, a tobacco importer of Edinburgh and his wife
Margaret Scott. 40 York Place was the residence of her brother George, a solicitor. George
of Sackville Street was a commissioner of the Rathmines and Rathgar Township. He took a
two month cruise on the coast of Norway. He contracted typhus fever after a visit to
Hamburg and died shortly afterwards on 11.08.1888 at Garland's Hotel, London. He left
113k in personal estate. Janet put Hopeton up for sale in 1890 as she was leaving Ireland.
She died at the Hydropathic Establishment Dunblane on 22.04.1897.
1 George Mitchell born circa 1858 married Anne McGlashan daughter of Edward
McGlashan of Dunedin, New Zealand on 07.10.1884 at the Parish Church,
Rathfarnham. They moved to Ardlui in 1893. Annie died on 27.10.1902 in Mayfair,
London aged 41 years.
2 Son Mitchell stillborn 08.06.1863.
3 Mary Mitchell elder daughter born circa 1864 married Edward Harcourt Skrine son
of Henry Duncan Skrine, JP of Claverton Manor, Bath on 31.08.1889 at Zion Church.
4 Ruth Mitchell younger daughter born 12.06.1865 married Dr William Bullen Day,
AMD, son of Arthur M Day of Rostrevor Terrace on 10.09.1889 at Zion Church.
5 Francis John Mitchell born 13.04.1868 at Hopeton attended his father's funeral in 1888.
He joined the King's Own 3rd Hussars. He married Grace Evelyn Lambert in 1898 in
London. They were living at Knorren Lodge, Brampton Carlisle, Askerton, Cumberland
in 1911 and had one child. He died 27 Mar 1960 in Kenya.
