Oliver Millar born circa 1745, son of James Millar, (c1714-1762) attorney at Law. He
attended Mr Ball’s Diocesan School and graduated Trinity BA in 1766. He took Holy
orders and married Rebecca Vance. He had a connection with the Balbriggan
School and also had a house and school at Mary Street, Dublin in 1781-1782 and
was Chaplin to the Independent Dublin Volunteers and the House of Industry. He
moved the school to 52 Henry Street in 1790, these were the old school premises of
Rev Dr Craig. He took in both day pupil and boarders. He was a member of the
Literary Teachers Association and was listed as receiver of subscriptions in the
1790’s. In 1792 he was elected freeman of the Corporation of Glovers and Skinners
Guild of the Blessed Virgin Mary by grace. He took over Prospect School in Blackrock
in 1795. He died on 14 Apr 1809 at Prospect House. His funeral was on Sunday
morning, and his remains were interred in Stillorgan Church-yard. ‘The funeral was
intended to be quite private, but early as it took place, and wet as the day was, his
afflicted neighbours assembled in numbers - took the coffin off the hearse, and
conveyed it themselves to the grave, with every mark of respect, affection, and
veneration’. In his Will he left bequests to his children and asked that his sister Ann
Hall would continue to live in his property in Lifford without being disturbed. The
school and lease on Prospect was left to his son James Vance Millar. Rebecca died
13 Apr 1831 at Markham near Clifton aged 77.
1 Arthur Millar died and was buried at Lifford graveyard.
2 James Vance Millar, eldest son born in Dublin circa 1773 attended his father’s
school and graduated Trinity BA 1792, Edinburgh MD and Trinity MA 1817. He
died 10 Jan 1818 age 45 and was buried at Stillorgan graveyard. He took over
the school after the death of his father.
3 John Millar died an infant and was buried at Stillorgan graveyard.
4 Margaret Millar baptised 19 June 1787 at St Mary’s died an infant and was
buried at Stillorgan graveyard.
5 John Forbes Millar born Henry Street baptised at St Mary’s 10 Jun 1791 died an
infant and was buried at Stillorgan graveyard.
6 Richard Millar was a captain the 22nd Regiment of Light Dragoons fl 1809.
7 Robert Miller moved to London fl 1809.
8 Oliver Millar baptised 5 Jul 1785.
9 Rebecca Millar, eldest daughter married Henry Kyle of Commercial Buildings,
Dame Street at Monkstown on 3 Jan 1817. They lived at Montpelier Parade near
Blackrock. Henry died 19 Jan 1839 aged 52. Rebecca died 21 Jan 1853. Both are
buried at Stillorgan graveyard.
1 Rebecca Sarah Kyle only child, born circa 1820 married Charles Atkinson
eldest son of late Robert Atkinson of Green Hall Co Armagh on 4 Feb 1846
at Monkstown Church. Charles died 8 May 1871 aged 67 and Rebecca
died 7 Oct 1885 aged 65, both at 1 Montpelier Place and were buried at
Stillorgan graveyard.
1 Rebecca Alicia Atkinson born 24 Nov 1846 at Montpelier Parade
unmarried and living with her brother Henry at Ballindaggan,
Wexford in 1911.
2 Henry Kyle Atkinson born 3 Dec 1849 at Montpelier Parade took
Holy orders and died at Templeshambo, Ferns on 28 Jul 1914.
3 Charles Caulfield Atkinson son died an Infant 7 May 1855 and
was buried at Stillorgan.
4 Son Atkinson born 20 Jul 1861 at Montpelier Parade.
10 Frances Millar, second daughter died at Cheltenham on 16 Dec 1848.
