John Martin Hodgins born 23 Apr 1865 at Dangan, Co Tipperary. He was son of John Henry
Hodgins, a farmer and his wife Mary Jackson. John was a farmer, land agent and was steward
living at Loran Park, Roscrea to General William Carden Roe. He was also an income tax
collector, and agent to George Austin Medlen of Lowlands, Roscrea. He married Sarah
Christina England on 10 Jan 1906 at St Paul’s Church of Ireland, North King Street, Smithfield,
Dublin. Sarah was the daughter of Joseph England, a farmer and his wife Eliza Dempsey.
She lists her residence as 16 Prussia Street and Corriga, Bourney, Roscrea. They lived at
Shanballynahagh, Bournay near Roscrea. John died 22 May 1913 at Shanballynahagh.
Proate was to his cousin Victor Angelo Grosso, auctioneer. Sarah was living in Adare in 1939.
She died 23 Oct 1954 at Adare, her son in law Albert the informant. Her funeral service was
held at Bourney Church.
1 Mildred Georgina Ruth Hodgins born 25 Mar 1907 at Shanballynahagh, Co
Tipperary was a teacher and principal at Stillorgan School from 1936 to 1938. She
was living at the school house in Stillorgan and married Albert Edward Telford on
14 Jun 1938 at St Brigid’s Church, Stillorgan. The bride wore a turquoise two piece.
The Rev Lewis Crosby performed the ceremony with the assistance of Rev J J A
Hodgins. Albert was an accountant, resident at Avenue House, Adare, Co Limerick
and the son of Richard Telford, an auctioneer of John’s Mall, Birr and his wife Jane
Elizabeth. Witnesses Sarah Christina Telford (mother) and Iris Mabel Telford. They
received over 100 wedding presents and had their wedding breakfast at the Four
Courts Hotel in Dublin. They honeymooned in Scotland. Albert worked for T R
Gavey’s estate office in Bitt and the for Messrs Carroll and Co house and estate
agents in Dublin. Shortly before he married, he obtained a post with the Earl of
Dunraven at Adare.
2 Daughter Hodgins born 8 Jun 1908 at Shanballynahagh died shortly after birth.
3 Albert John Joseph Hodgins born 13 September 1909 at Shanballynahagh, Co
Tipperary. John was educated at the local national school at Bourney. Morgans
School in Dublin and graduated Trinity with degrees in Philosophy and Theology.
He took Holy orders and was Chaplin to the forces in North Africa. He married
Rosemary Knowles in September 1939. Rosemary was the daughter of Rev Admiral
G H Knowles, DSO, RN of The Grange, Riseley, Bedford. He served during WWII and
was evacuated from Dunkirk. They lived at Chester and John was appointed vicar
of Helsby, Runcorn in 1965.
4 Thomas Henry Hodgins born 12 Oct 1910 at Shanballynahagh, Co Tipperary was a
farmer of Clareen in Birr. He married Charlotte Elizabeth Eades on 4 Sep 1946 at
Holy Trinity Church, Rathmines. Charlotte was the daughter of Thomas Eades and
was living at 107 Upper Rathmines Road.
