Memorials Inscriptions
Memorial Inscriptions are mainly found, in churches, graveyards and cemeteries and can offer a surprising amount of family
information. They may include information relating to several generations of the same family and are also a useful source in
conjunction with parish records or where (a) parish registers are not extant or (b) an entry is not found. Whilst a death record
may show where the burial took place, as might an obituary - a headstone inscription can often list the name of a house or
give an insight into their life. Town and county directories, for example Thom’s usually list churches and burial grounds.
Only the wealthier families could afford the cost of a headstone in earlier centuries but by the middle of the 20th century
this had become common practice with the majority of families.
