Enoch Medcalf born 8 Sep 1874 at Altadore, Co Wicklow to Anthony Metcalf, a gardener and Sara Jane
Byrnes. He was a gardener living at Strand House, Clontarf when he married Mary King, daughter of
William King, a carpenter at Christ Church, Carysfort on 23 Jul 1895. Enoch worked as a gardener and as
a railway porter in Mountmellick where they lived at Quality row. He subsequently worked as a
coachman and gardener at Galloping green. They were living on the Dublin Road, Stillorgan in 1911 but
had moved to 5 Kilmacud Road by 1921. Enoch was cycling on his way back to The Grange, where
he worked as a gardener for Dean Lewis Crosby when he was hit by a car at the crossroads in Stillorgan
and suffered a fractured skull. Enoch died 5 Dec 1939 at St Michael’s Hospital Dun Laoghaire, late of 5
Kilmacud Road and was buried with his daughter Hannah at Deansgrange. Mary died 3 Mar 1952 at 5
Kilmacud Road. Her funeral service was held at St Brigid's Church and she was buried at Deansgrange
with her husband.
1 William Metcalf born 6 May 1896 at Templeville, Templeogue was an apprentice grocer in 1911.
He enlisted and was with the 5th Inniskillings in Gallipoli in 1915 when he wrote to his mother
telling her that half the battalion and most of the officers had been killed. He had taken a bullet
to the heal of his boot and shrapnel haversack. He also commented that large shells added
flavour to the food.
2 John Metcalf 11 Feb 1898 at Quality Row, Mountmellick. He was a soldier and married Catherine
Kavanagh at St John the Baptist Church, Blackrock on 20 Jan 1925. Catherine, daughter of
Thomas Kavanagh a labourer was living at Brookfield Place at the time of her marriage.
3 Edward Metcalf born 4 Oct 1900 at Galloping Green baptised at Stillorgan Parish Church was a
motor driver. He married, and died at Grange Gorman Hospital on 23 Jun 1952.
4 Mary Metcalf born 18 May 1902 at Galloping Green baptised at Stillorgan Parish Church.
5 Hannah Metcalf born 26 Jun 1906 at Barn Elms, Rathfarnham. She was a domestic servant and
died from TB a spinster on 15 Apr 1933 at 5 Kilmacud Road and was buried at Deansgrange.
1 Sarah Metcalf born circa 7 Jun 1930 baptised at St Brigid's.
