James Hannah McQuiston born 28 Mar 1883 son of John McQuiston, a draper in Glasgow
and his wife Helen Young. He studied law but later changed to study business. He was a
drapers assistant living in Liverpool in 1911. His parents by that time had moved to
London. He was a store buyer, resident at 155 Botanic Road, Glasnevin and married
Edith Rose Johnston, on 13 Nov 1915 at St George's Church, Temple Street, Dublin. Edith
was a shop assistant and resident at 34 Haldane Avenue, Cloughton, Birkenhead,
Cheshire. She was the daughter of George William Johnston, a Dock Board Officer and
his wife Roseanna Connolly. Witnesses were William John Young and Margaret Emma
Long. He served with the Royal Flying corps and transferred to the RAF in 1918. After
the war, James became a buyer for the Army & Navy Stores. He moved to England and
worked in various Co-ops including Nuneaton. He returned from Bournemouth to Ireland
in 1936 as General Manager of Switzers on a three year contact to turn the store around
and was Managing Director by 1941. James was President of the Dublin Scottish
Benevolent Society of St Andrew and he was also on the council of the Federated Union
of Employers and the Drapers’ Chamber of Trade. They lived at Beaumont on Waltham
Terrace from 1940 to 1942 and moved to Larkvale on Merrion Road in 1943. He retired
from Switzers in 1960 and they moved to Adair House Flats in Sandymount. James died
16 Dec 1960 at Merrion Nursing Home, Herbert Street late of Adair House, Sandymount
Avenue. His funeral service was held at Adelaide Road Presbyterian Church and he was
buried at Mount Jerome. Edith died 24 Dec 1962 late of Sandymount and was buried with
her husband.
1 Cecil McQuiston born 2 Mar 1920 at 57 York Road, Kingstown. He attained a
degree in business, and in law and went to London to work in 1947. He worked with
his father in Switzers and in 1953 they showcased Irish jewellery at Goldsmiths Hall
in London. He was president of the Grafton Street Development Council. He
married Hilda Dancey at Monkstown Parish Church and the reception was held at
The Shelbourne. He was assistant managing director of Switzers in 1960 and vice
president of the National Federation of Drapers in 1962. He went to Columbia
College in America in 1962 to take a course under the Department of External Affairs
exchange scheme.
