John born circa 1878 Dublin son of Peter McManus, a clerk was a photo engraver. He married
Agnes Mulvey daughter of Francis Mulvey a printer/compositor and Elizabeth Lunders at St Kevin’s
Church, Harrington Street on 25 Sep 1901. The family lived at Heytesbury Street, Dublin in 1911.
John was an artist and photo engraver. He died on 18 Nov 1932 aged 54 at Coolgarrif and was
buried at Deansgrange, Agnes died 18 Aug 1952 aged 75 at Coolgarrif and was buried at
Deansgrange.
1 Kevin (Jack) McManus born 21 Oct 1903 at Holles Street to John & Agnes of 9 Curzon Street.
Kevin was a press photographer with the Irish Times and married Josephine Phelan, a
shopkeeper and daughter of Michael B Phelan at Aughrim Church, Co Wicklow on
6 Sep 1931.
2 John Brendan (Sean) McManus, second son born 17 Jul 1905 at Arnott Street, Portobello
was an artist and photo engraver. He married Margaret Julia (Molly) Mahon, a teacher
of 115 The Rise Mount Merrion and daughter of the late Patrick Mahon, a Sgt Major in the
British Army and of the United Provinces, India on 26 Jun 1941 at St Terese's Church
Mount Merrion Church. The reception was held at the Shanganagh Castle Hotel and they
honeymooned in the West of Ireland. Sean, managing director of the Dublin Illustrating
Company, died 18 Dec 1960 and was buried at Deansgrange.
3 Agnes Carmel (Una) McManus born 12 Jul 1907 at 11 Heytesbury Street married Richard Noel
Kennedy, proprietor of the OK Service Station, Stillorgan in 1935 and son of Daniel Kennedy
and Henrietta Kelly of Ulster Terrace on 21 Aug 1935 at St John’s Blackrock. Their first child
was born at Greenfield road, Mount Merrion but they moved back to Coolgarrif, Una’s family
home. From 1942 the OK Service station repaired cars, sold second hand cars and employed
local lads as petrol pump attendants. Richard Noel (Dick) Kennedy was the owner, a man who
in the late 50’s and early 60’s was involved in the South Great Georges Street Santa charity.
This was a scheme where people donated faulty broken toys, which were then repaired and
given to children who might not expect a visit from Santa. The Post Office also got involved in
this scheme and in one year over 70,000 toys were distributed.
Dick collected the toys during the year brought them for repair, collected them and stored
them at the garage until Christmas. He also provided the charity with his caravan for use as a
Santa’s Grotto. In 1956 the people of Hungary revolted against the Communist government
and its Soviet-imposed policies. This led to widespread hunger and the Irish Red Cross were
one of the bodies that gave aid. The OK Service garage became a depot for donations of
tinned goods, blankets and medical supplies.
4 Bernard (Benny) McManus born 20 Aug 1908 at 11 Heytesbury Street. He was a photo
engraver and married Emily Christina McKeon, daughter of John McKeon, a cattle dealer of
Cabra Road at Aughrim Street Church on 9 Jul 1938. He was a director of the Dublin Illustrating
Company and lived at 5 Grove Avenue, Stillorgan.
5 Catherine Mary (Callie) McManus born 1 May 1910 at 11 Heytesbury Street never married.
6 Richard McManus born 31 Jan 1912 at 11 Heytesbury Street, was a director of the Dublin
Illustrating Company of 265 Townsend Street. He died a bachelor at Mercers Hospital
late of Coolgariff on 8 Jun 1953.
7 Elizabeth McManus, youngest daughter married Cormac McGuinness, son of the late Mr and
Mrs C S Mc Guinness of Dalkey at St John’s Blackrock in July 1945. The reception was held at
the Royal Marine Hotel in Dun Laoghaire.
