John Francis McGuire son of Edward McGuire and Margaret Leahy married Mary Frances
Moloney daughter of James Moloney of Tramore in 1900. The family moved to Dublin circa
1920 and John and Mary lived at Cambridge House, Rathmines. Shortly afterwards John
Francis McGuire became managing director of Clerys department store. Following a
disagreement with the board of Clery’s the McGuires purchased Brown Thomas on Grafton
Street in 1933 which they revamped into a thriving department store and employed the
artist; Norah Guinness to dress the windows. Mary died in 1949 and was buried at Glasnevin,
John F died in 1953 and was buried with his wife.
1 Edward Augustine McGuire born 28.08.1901 at Priest Road, Tramore was educated
at Clongowes and Douai School. Edward a Director of Clery’s Department Store of
Cambridge House, Rathmines married Bridget Patricia (Billie) Neary of 47 Upper
Mount Street daughter of Denis Neary of Newry on 14.07.1926 at St Andrew’s Roman
Catholic Church, Westland Row, Dublin. He played tennis and was on the Davis Cup
Team from 1924-1937. He was nominated by An Taoiseach to the 6th Seanad in
1948 and was a Senator for 25 years. Bridget died on 20.02.1953 aged 43 at 97 Lower
Leeson Street late of Newtownpark House and is buried at Deansgrange. There is a
window by Evie Hone commemorating Bridget in the Church of St John the Baptist in
Blackrock. The McGuires lived at Newtownpark House from 1946 until 1976. Edward
was chairman of Brown Thomas before selling it in 1970 to Galen Weston. During their
years at Newtownpark House, the balustrade and portico acquired in UK was added.
They refitted Georgian fireplaces and filled the house with paintings, antiques and
other object d’art. The grounds hosted events including a gymkhana in 1955 in aid of
the Central Remedial Clinic.
1 John Francis McGuire took over the Todd Burns store in Mary Street, Dublin.
This store became known as Todco and today we know it as Penneys.
John married Biorgitta Wennenberg daughter of the Swedish Minister to
Ireland on at St Clemens Church, Halsingborg, Sweden. He was a director
of Brown Thomas Plc. When he retired, they moved to London.
2 Barbara M McGuire born in Blackrock married Richard Corballis son of Captain
J C Corballis of Ashford at St John the Baptist Church with the reception
afterwards at Newtownpark House.
3 Edward Augustine McGuire third eldest born 10.04.1932 at 40 Upper Fitzwilliam
Street of Mountrath, Foxrock. Edward was a member of the RHA and married
Sara Browne (née Wright) divorced sister-in-law of Garech Browne. Edward
Maguire's paintings are on view in the National Gallery, The Hugh Lane Gallery,
and the Ulster Museum Belfast. His painting of President Ó'Dálaigh is on view
in the Palais de la Cour de Justice Européene in Luxembourg.

Edward married secondly Kathleen Adolphine Sophia Karey Eyston née Rappalle in
1959 at Amersham, Buckinghamshire. The house and contents were put up for sale
in 1976. Edward died on 27.10.1992 aged 72 years and is buried at Deansgrange.
2 James Ivan McGuire born 24.07.1903 at St Aubin’s Place, Waterford. James was a
barrister and politician.
3 Margaret McGuire born 16.11.1904 at 6 St Aubin’s Place, Waterford. Margaret of
Cambridge House married John O’Byrne a Barrister of 4 Waterloo Road son of Patrick
O’Byrne on 19.03.1924 at the Roman Catholic Church of the Immaculate Lady of
Refuge, Rathmines.
4 Mary McGuire born 07.04.1906 at 6 St Declan’s Place, Waterford married Patrick
Joseph Duggan a Draper of Kilkenny son of Richard Duggan on 05.10.1932 at the
Roman Catholic Church of the Immaculate Lady of Refuge, Rathmines
5 Owen McGuire born 31.01.1908 at 6 St Declan’s Place, Waterford and died
13.03.1908 aged 6 weeks at same place.
6 Dermot McGuire born 25.03.1909 at 6 St Declan’s Place, Waterford. Dermot went to
Canada in 1929.
7 Herbert Joseph McGuire born circa 14.05.1913 at 58 Lower Newtown, Waterford.
Herbert of Cambridge House married Maureen Quinlan of Ormond Road, Rathmines
daughter of Charles H Quinlan on 04.06.1936 at the Roman Catholic Church of the
Holy Name, Rathmines
