James M’Fadden of Cavan married Anne Babington
1 James M’Fadden, third son born circa 1816 educated in Cavan and
admitted Kings Inns 1831. James M’Fadden a solicitor was at 117
Stephen’s Green West in 1843 and settled at 115 by 1844. In 1849 he
was fired at by a client called Michael Frederick Fox and suffered powder
burns to his face. He was solicitor to the short lived Enniskillen Sligo
Railway Company. James M’Fadden purchased Harlech for £780 in July
1862. James died a bachelor on 20 Feb 1864 at 115 Stephen’s Green.
William M’Fadden and Thomas Reilly of Butlersbridge, Cavan were his
executors. The Andrean Parochial School for Orphans received £100.
2 Hannah McFadden married Thomas Plunkett at Cavan on 24 Sep 1845.
Thomas was the second son of Michael Plunkett of Ballykenny House,
Castletowndelvin, Co Westmeath. Thomas was a member of the Royal
Western Yacht Club and by 1856 they lived at Ballybrophy House.
Thomas had land in both Cavan and Sligo. Thomas died 25 Jul 1906 at
Ballybrophy House, Roscrea.
1 Joseph Michael Plunkett eldest son born circa 1846 in Queen’s
County. On inheriting the M’Fadden Cavan estates he changed his
name to Joseph Plunkett M’Fadden. He was appointed a JP in 1882.
He married Laura Caroline Darby on 30 Aug 1887 at Holy Trinity
Church, Richmond, Surrey. Laura was the eldest daughter of the
late Jonathan Darby and Caroline Curteis Graham, of Leap Castle,
King’s County. He was a JP and they lived at Ballybrophy House.
Laura fled the family home in 1896 with the children and they lived
under an assumed name. She sought a divorce in 1897 on the
grounds of cruelty and misconduct but it was not granted. On
1 Dec 1898 Joseph leased Ballybrophy House to Henry V White,
County Surveyor for five years, and lived in an annex off the main
house with his father. In 1908 sold the estate to the tenants and the
ancient monuments on the estate were vested with the Bord of Works.
Joseph moved to London and reverted to the Plunkett surname. By
1913 Laura moved to Starlings in Ditchling where her husband
discovered her. In 1917 Laura took an action against her husband for
desertion seeking a judicial separation. Her case was that husband
had money troubles and that she kept the house going using her own
money, money borrowed from her mother, and whatever money she
got from selling farm produce. Her uncle died leaving her 10K, she
paid her debts and left knowing she had enough money to educate
her two children. Joseph claimed his wife was a mad women. The
separation was not granted. Laura born 25 Jan 1858 died a widow at
Hove on 26 Jan 1940.
1 Veronica Laura Caroline Plunkett M’Fadden born 23 Jun 1890 was
a spinster living with her mother in Hove in 1939. Veronica
Plunkett of Les An Erin, Sussex died 20 Dec 1955 at Hove General
Hospital. She left 20K in personal estate.
2 Oliver Plunkett M’Fadden born 19 Jul 1888 at Ballybrophy House.
He joined the British Army and served during WW1. Captain
Oliver Plunkett married Elsie Campbell Ruddell on 17 Mar 1920 at
Hove, Sussex. Elsie was the third daughter of Major-General J A
Ruddell of the 1st Royal Scots Regiment.
2 Oliver Plunkett second son born circa 1848 lived at Ballybrophy House and
was a JP. On inheriting the M’Faddens Cavan estates he changed his name
to Oliver Plunkett M'Fadden. Oliver died a bachelor on 16 Sep 1886 aged 38
at Ballybrophy and Joseph M Plunkett M'Fadden was his executor.
3 William M’Fadden born circa 1824 lived a Corlismore in Co Cavan.
He died a bachelor on 22 Dec 1869.
