Edward Darcy McCrea, son of John McCrea was born circa 1825 and married Elizabeth
Harris, daughter of John Harris of 23 Dawson Street, Asst. Secretary Kings Inns on
1 Mar 1856 at St Anne's Church Dublin. Edward was a merchant with premises at 51
William Street. He set up a shirt and collar & pyjamas manufacturing business at
Wood Street in 1852, the business was still operating in 1937. The family lived at Altona, on
Leopardstown Road from 1867 to 1925. Elizabeth died at Altona on 21 Mar 1893 and
Edward died at Bristol, the home of his son Philip on 21 May 1894. Both are buried together
in Deansgrange.
1 Edward Harris McCrea born circa 1859. He was residing at Altona when he
married Wilhelmina Lucinda Baker at the Dublin Registry Office on 19 Mar 1894.
John was a Protestant and Wilhelmina was a Quaker born to Jonathan William
Baker and Anna Louisa Nickson. Edward took over the shirt and collar business,
and they lived at various addresses in the Dundrum/Kilmacud area. Edward
died 10 Dec 1923 at Glenshiel, Dundrum aged 64 and Wilhelmina died
15 Aug 1835 aged 65 at Glenshiel. Both were buried at Temple Hill.
1 Elizabeth Irene McCrea born 14 Jul 1895 at Bellefield Villa Dundrum. She
was residing at Glenshiel, Dundrum when she married Sidney G Prost of
Herbert Park, son of Mathias Prost, a perfumer and Alexandrina Noble, at
The Friends Meeting House, Churchtown on 10 Sep 1930.
2 Anna Doris McCrea born 22 Feb 1897 at Hazelwood. She lived at
Tinnahinch and bred Pekingese dogs.
3 William Baker Edward McCrea born 30 Sep 1899 at Hazelwood House.
He lived at 61 Fitzwilliam Square, and Lough Bray House at Glencree
before immigrating to South Africa circa 1952.
4 Samuel Francis McCrea born 19 Apr 1907 at Hazelwood. In 1935 he was
living at Glenshiel, Dundrum and was working as a commercial agent.
2 John Harris McCrea born circa 1863 a shirt merchant married Jeannette Eleanor
Seale of Mount Aventine, Foxrock on 11 Apr 1894 at St Anne’s Church, Dublin.
They lived at Altona and them immigrated with their daughter to South Africa in
1925. John died at Grahamstown, SA on 13 May 1943.
1 Edward d’Arcy McCrea born 7 Feb 1895 at Altona. He was educated at
Wycliff College, Stonehouse, Gloucestershire, and at Trinity College, Dublin,
where he graduated MD in 1917 and Master of Surgery in 1922. He also
gained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He was
commissioned as a temporary captain, Royal Army Medical Corps on
30 Jul 1918 and was sent to France. He was an Irish international Tennis
player and played on the David Cup team in 1923 and in 1924. He married
Edith Florence Willock, only daughter of W A Willock of Salterton at Ottery St
Mary in Devon on 25 Sep 1925. Florence was also medical graduate of
Dublin and a Fellow of the College of Surgeons.
They moved to Manchester where Edward was registrar of the Department of
Urology at Salford Royal Hospital and Edith was surgeon to the Manchester
Babies Hospital. Both published regularly in medical journals. The couple lived
and worked from John’s Street but moved with their children to The Cottage,
Worsley, about 9 miles outside Manchester, after the Salford air raids. The
family along with their maid were killed in an air raid on 22 Dec 1940 when
a parachute mine landed a direct hit their house. The family were buried
together at Salford.

2 Marjorie Gillian McCrea born 6 Sep 1931 died 22 Dec 1940.
2 Philip Carrington Seale born 27 Sep 1896 at Altona joined the Royal Air Force. He
was a prisoner of war in 1918. He immigrated to South Africa in in 1920.
3 Evelyn Joyce born 5 Oct 1905 at Altona was a talented pianist and immigrated to South
Africa with her parents.
3 Philip William McCrea born 29 Apr 1864 at Dawson Street. Philip was a doctor
and moved to Bristol. He married Harriett Rositor Mitchelmore, daughter of Philip
William Mitchelmore of Totnes, Devon at St Andrews Church Muswell Hill on
10 Aug 1912. They lived at Portland Place, Bristol. Philip died 20 Nov 1946 at Bristol.
