McCausland Family of Merville, Waltersland, Stillorgan
William James McCausland married Susan Waters. He was a solicitor and lived at Merville from
1837 to 1856. The family firm was Fetherston and McCausland who were solicitors to the
Ecclesiastical Commissioners and to the Board of Charitable Donations and Bequests. Their town
house was at 38 Upper Merrion Street before moving to 27 Fitzwilliam Street. Susan died 12.10.1861
at Trimleston House, Booterstown and William died 09.10.1865 at Longford Terrace, Monkstown.
1 Richard Bolton McCausland born circa 1810 was called to the bar in 1834. He married
Fanny Mary Blake daughter of Edward Blake of Castlegrove, Galway in April 1841 at Kilconley,
Galway and he was a law lecturer to the King’s Inns 1853-1855. He was appointed Recorder of
Singapore in 1855 and knighted on that occasion. In 1866 he returned to Ireland on inheriting
a family estate at Cappaghduff, Mayo. He lived at Merville from 1866 to 1873 and also had a
house at Kildare Street. Richard died 08.06.1900 at 61 Fitzwilliam Square.
1 Annie McCausland eldest daughter born circa 1842 of Walters Land married Lieut
Charles Edward Souper of the Royal Artillery son of Philip Souper on 20.07.1871 at the
Parish Church, Stillorgan. Annie died circa 09.07.1930 aged 88 years.

Woolwich, Kent.
2 Katherine Mary Louisa Annie Souper born 08.04.1873 at the Royal Military
Academy, Woolwich, Kent.

Robert died on 02.05.1889 at 89 Merrion Square and Susan died 12.07.1891 aged 42
years at Drumbawn.
1 Lieut Col John McDonell born 02.11.1878 at 14 Lower Pembroke Street, Dublin
of the 5th Battalion, Royal Leinster Regiment killed by an enemy shell on
29.09.1918 in Belgium.
3 Captain Edward Oliver McCausland born circa 1851 at 3 Upper Merrion Street
19.06.1850 late of Tourmakeady, Mayo died on 06.10.1915 aged 64 years at Elpis
Hospital, Dublin.
4 Fanny Mary McCausland born circa 1851 married Richard Maunsell Waller of the
Indian Civil Service son of John Waller on 21.09.1876 at Ballyovie Church, Mayo.
Richard died on 03.03.1926 aged 81 years and Fannie died on 23.07.1928 aged 77
years both at 11 Galtrim Road, Bray.
5 Louisa Jane McCausland born circa 1854 died unmarried on 28.03.1916 aged 62
years at Kilsharvan late of Tourmakeady, Mayo and left 17K in personal estate.
6 Kathleen McCausland youngest daughter born circa 1857 died unmarried on
29.05.1902 aged 45 years at Weston, Enniskerry, Wicklow.
7 Richard Bolton McCausland MD born 17.07.1862 in Singapore, West Bengal, India
became a notable surgeon in the Royal College of Surgeons. Richard married
Charlotte Maria Brown-Séquard daughter of Charles Édouard Brown-Séquard on
16.12.1897 at Holy Trinity Church, Killiney. Richard died 09.10.1933 in Kent.

3 Oliver McCausland third son was born in Dublin circa 1818. He attended Trinity and was
called to the Irish Bar in 1841. As second son he married Charlotte Maria Gladstanes at St
Georges, Hanover square in 1852. The family were living at 34 Leeson Street from 1854 to
1858 and at Orsett Terrace, Paddington, London in 1871. Oliver died at Eastbourne in
August 1888 and Charlotte died at Kensington in 1905.
1 Elizabeth Susan McCausland born Ireland February 1853 married Frederick Branton
Blyth of Lincoln’s Inn Fields and son of Anthony at Paddington on 8 Oct 1874. Philip
died in 1918. Elizabeth, a widow was living at 80 North End Road, Golders Green in
1930.

3 Charlotte Catherine (Katharine) McCausland born 9 May 1859 at Lower Leeson Street.
Catherine was a painter and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy in London
between 1886 and 1904. She moved to Paris in the mid 1880s, where she studied with
Carolus-Duran and Henner, and with Robert Fleury at the the Academie Julian. She
exhibited at the Paris Salon and was a friend and neighbour of Irish painter Roderic
O'Conor. She moved to Grez-sur-Lointhe, an artists colony, with her companion Guy
Maynard. Catherine died 2 Dec 1928 at 7 Rue Texel, Paris. She left over 4K in personal
estate. Probate was to her sister and two nephews. She offered her paintings to Hugh
Lane for his exhibition in 1904 and one of her paintings of Ellen Helleu forms part of
the collection of the Hugh Lane Gallery.
4 Marcus McCausland married Emma Marion Hayden daughter of James D Hayden of
Lyncombe, Bath at St Peter's Church Dublin on 25 Mar 1856.
5 Catherine Anne McCausland born circa 1819 died a spinster at Fitzwilliam Square on
14 May 1899 and left 6K in personal estate.
6 Susan M McCausland born circa 1820 died a spinster at Baggot Street on 136 Nov 1902 and
left 10K in personal estate.
7 Charlotte McCausland youngest daughter born circa 1823 died a spinster on 12 Mar 1892 at
Fitzwilliam Square and left 4.5k in personal estate.
Catherine McCausland married William Conyngham Plunket, 1st Baron Plunket in 1790. Catherine died
circa 1821 and her nephew Sir Richard Bolton McCausland inherited the Drumbawn property in Mayo.
