William Mooney born circa 1824 son of Edmund Mooney of Ballyglass, Mulllingar and
Eliza Nolan. He was educated at Oscott, Warwickshire. In 1842, he was one of the first 6
solicitors to be admitted after the passing of the Catholic Emancipation Act. He married
Catherine (Kate) Merlehan in 5 Feb 1855 at Castletowndevlin. William was resident at
Temple Street, Dublin and Kate was the eldest daughter of Patrick Merlehan of
Martinstown, Co Westmeath. William was Chief Crown Solicitor for Westmeath and
solicitor to the Drainage Board. He kept hunters and rode with the Killing Kildares.
Catherine died 18 May 1889 at Leixlip Castle and was buried at Glasnevin. She left £730 in
personal estate. William died 22 Nov 1913 at Leixlip Castle and was buried at Glasnevin.
He left 15K in personal estate.
1 Edmund Mooney eldest son born 5 Jan 1856 at Temple Street, baptised at the Pro
Cathedral. He played cricket for the Gentlemen of Ireland and Dublin University.
He was admitted Kings Inns in 1881. He married Margaret McCartan on
10 Nov 1886 at Riverstown, Mullingar. Gretta was the daughter of Captain Patrick
McCartan of New York. Edmund and Gretta were life governors of the Royal
Hospital for Incurables. He was a solicitor and was principle of Messrs William
Mooney and Sons, Fleet Street. He was appointed a JP in 1909. They lived at Elm
Green, Blanchardstown from 1890 to 1918. They had three children of whom all
had survived in 1911. He was a life member of the Royal Zoological Society. He
was solicitor to Bula Croker in 1923. Gretta died aged 58 on 27 Apr 1920 at Elm
Green and was buried at Glasnevin. Edmund McCartan Mooney died at 97 Lower
Leeson Street, late of Lisnacarrig, Foxrock on 6 May 1933 and was buried at
Glasnevin. He left 131K in personal estate.

He attended Oxford and was manager of Phoenix Cricket Club. He was called
to the bar in 1912. He was head of Messrs William Mooney and Sons, Fleet
Street. He married Rose Harley in London on 10 Jun 1915. Rose was the
daughter of Theodore Harley Broughton, Bromley in Kent. They had assumed
the name McCartan Mooney by 1922. They lived at Beaumont, Blackrock from
1935 to 1937. Edmund died at on 22 Oct 1960 late of Anglesea Road.

2 Clare Mooney was a secretary living in England. She was unmarried in
1969 and went to Australia.
3 Edmund Frederick William (Eamon) Mooney born 8 Oct 1918 at Elm
Green. He attended Beaumont College and joined the RAF. He was shot
down over Tobruk and taken POW. He was shot when the crew were
trying to escape on 14 Sep 1942. His portrait painted by Leo Whelan and
was exhibited in 1952. Edmund McCartan Mooney remembered on the
El Alamein, Maṭrūḥ, Egypt.

2 William McCartan Joseph (Willie) Mooney born 5 Oct 1890 at Elm Green, Co Dublin.
He was educated at Beaumont College, Berkshire and Oxford University. He played
for Phoenix Cricket Club and was capped for Ireland 4 times. He first game for
Ireland was in 1909 in New York and his last was against Scotland at Rathmines in
1912. He gained a commission with the Duke of Cornwall’s Light infantry in 1911.
He retired in 1922 with the rank of captain. He married Honor Mahony on
16 Jan 1917 at Dripsey, Cork. Honor was the daughter of Ernest Mahony. They had
assumed the name McCartan Mooney by 1922. They were living at 98 Merrion Road.
William died at Ailesbury Road on 30 Nov 1961 and was buried at Glasnevin. Honor
died in 1978 and was buried with her husband.
1 Edmund Noel McCartan Mooney born at Pembroke Street on 6 Jan 1918 was
commissioned to the Royal Irish Fusiliers in 1938. He saw service in Palestine
and during WWII he was in North Africa and Italy. He attained the rank of
captain and transferred to the Royal Army Service Corps in 1946. Major
McCartan-Mooney retired from the army in 1960. His war medals came up
for sale in 2022 quoting just over 1K euro.
2 Gretta Pamela Ruth (Pamela) Mooney only daughter born 2 Sep 1920 at
Fitzwilliam Street. Pamela married Wing Commander Piers Kelly on 5 Aug 1944
at St James' Church, Spanish Place, London. Piers was son of Colonel D P J
Kelly, OBE, MC of Palmerston, Edinburgh.
3 Rosemary Catherine Mooney born 10 May 1898 at Elm Green, Castleknock. She
married John Andrew Leonard at Foxrock Church on 21 Oct 1930. John was the
son of John Leonard and was resident at Dunshaughlin.

11 Frederick Michael Mooney, fourth son born 23 Jun 1877 at Eccles Street, Dublin. He
was called to the Irish Bar in 1901 and married Myra Fottrell on 8 Aug 1905 at Ballybrack.
Myra was the daughter of George Fottrell. Frederick, youngest son died 20 Jun 1917 at
Carrigrenane, Killiney. No issue in 1911.
