John M'Cann of Drogeda
1 James M’Cann eldest son born circa 1789 married Catherine Coleman. He was
senior partner of James McCann & Sons, Millers of Co Meath. They had a large
bakery at 15 West Street, Drogheda and they had stores at Coyle’s yard in
Athlone. Tenelick Mills went on fire in 1833 but the Phoenix insurance Company
covered the damage. He was a rich Catholic merchant and sheriff of Drogheda
in 1851. They lived at Staleen House in Drogheda. He was on the committee
for the Catholic Institution for the Deaf and Dumb (St Mary’s Cabra). He presided
at a banquet in 1840 to honour Sir William Meredyth Somerville, MP for his
exertions to get civil and religious liberty. Catherine died on the 12 Apr 1848. He
and was elected and Independent MP for Drogheda in 1852. He stood as a Whig
in 1857 and Liberal in 1859 and held the seat until 1865 when he did not seek re
election. He was a reformer for National education and tenant rights.
1 John Henry M’Cann eldest son born circa 1824 married Elizabeth Florence
Macartney on 4 May 1852 at the Church of Our Lady of Refuge, Rathmines.
Elizabeth was the youngest daughter of Morgan Macartney (or MacNamara)
of Scarteen, Co Limerick. He became corn merchant and became senior
partner in the firm on the death of his father. He died 28 Jun 1887 at Staleen
House and administration was granted to his wife Elizabeth. He left 6K in
personal estate but it appears the estate was not administered. Elizabeth
Florence died at her residence on Waterloo Road, Dublin 20 29 May 1903
aged 71.
1 John Henry McCann second son born circa 1855. He was a solicitor for
Drogheda Corporation and married Mary Hedley at Haddington Road
in 1892. Mary was the eldest daughter of John Hedley of Felton,
Northumberland. They were living at Staleen and had seven children
of whom four survived in 1911. John died on 16 Mar 1920 at Staleen
and Mary died on 24 Aug 1931 at 15 Adelaide Road, Dublin.

Drogheda.
4 Geoffrey Anthony Delahoyd McCann born 23 April 1910 at Staleen

2 Florence McCann born circa 1856 living with her mother at Glasnevin
in 1901. She died at the house of her brother Arthur in Mountmellick on
13 Jul 1922.
3 Walter T F McCann born circa 1863 living with his brother John at
Staleen in 1911.
4 Charles Edward McCann third son born circa 1864 in Dublin. He married
Katherine Mary Joseph O’Connell Bianconi on 6 Dec 1887 at Emly Church,
Tipperary and they had one child. Kathering was the daughter of
Charles Bianconi. He was a farmer and rate collector. He died
18 Oct 1915 at Bettystown late of Newtown Platten.

2 Thomas Stanislaus McCann born circa 1828 married Dorinda Josephine
Harrington on 17 Jan 1865 at St Patrick’s Church, Cork. Thomas was a 36 year
old bachelor and Dorinda was 43, the widow of Charles Murphy of
Belleville, Cork and the daughter of William Harrington, a druggist. Thomas
was a junior partner in the firm. He left the partnership in 1887 and traded
from 84 Harcourt Street, Dublin as a merchant. He was co-opted on to the
board of Dublin Distillers Company in 1892. Dorinda died 22 May 1898 aged
70 at 46 Northumberland Road and was buried at Glasnevin. He died a
widower at the Spa Hotel, Lucan on 12 Jun 1899 late of 46 Northumberland
Road and was buried at Glasnevin. Thomas a stockbroker left 27K in
personal estate.
3 James M’Cann born circa 1827 attended Stoneyhurst College and received a
mathematics prize in 1841. He married but his wife died shortly after their
marriage. He joined the priesthood and died at Mullabawn, Forkhill where
he was parish priest for ten years on 17 Apr 1888.
4 Rosa M’Cann second daughter married John Thomas Luther on 26 May 1857
at Donore Church, Co Meath. John was from Brookdale, Clonmel. Witnesses
Anna M’Cann and John Bianconi.
5 Harry McCann born circa 1833 was a corn merchant of Cartron Abbey. As
youngest son he married Kate Daly on 17 Oct 1859 at Moydow RC Chapel.
Kate was the second daughter of Edward Daly of Bawn House, Co Longford.
He was appointed a JP for Longford in 1859 and dismissed in 1862. Kate
died at Charlemont Terrace, Kingstown on 25 Jul 1866 and Harry put Carton
Abbey up for lease. Harry was master of the Longford Harriers and resigned
in 1878. He was a member of the Longford Union and Board of Guardians
and was living at Viewmount Longford in 1879.
1 James Joseph McCann eldest son born August 1861 at Cartron Abbey,
Longford married Helen McDougall on 5 May 1884 at the Pro Cathedral.
Helen was the daughter of Ninian McDougall of Ballycastle. James, a
clerk died 17 Oct 1892 at Richmond Avenue, Fairview.

3 Edward Matthew McCann born 1 Jun 1866 at Cartron Abbey.
Harry secondly married Bridget Rorke circa 1870 and had at least five further
children. Harry died 28 Mar 1902 and his will was disputed by the children of
the 1st marriage.
6 Mathew M’Cann, youngest son born circa 1835 died 29 Apr 1850 at
Clongowes Wood College.
7 Minnie McCann born circa 1837 married Matthew McCann of Caulstown,
Co Meath on 11 May 1865 at Donore. Minnie died on 23 Jan 1903 at
Caulstown.
He secondly married Mary McKenna, relict of Alderman William Campbell at
St Peter’s RC Church, Drogheda on 1 Jun 1863. He died 25 Feb 1873 at the Imperial
Hotel on Lower Sackville Street late of Tinaleek, Co Longford. He left 35K in
personal estate.
2 William M’Cann of Tinalik, (Tennalick) Co Longford married Ann Callaghan on
4 Aug 1827. Anne was the eldest daughter of Malachy Callaghan of Dublin
City. He was admitted a member of the Corn Exchange in 1836. They lived
at Herbert House from 1848 to 1852. William was on the Committee for the
Catholic Institution for the Deaf and Dumb (St Mary’s, Cabra) in 1849 and
was a collector for the Emigrant Protection Society (under the auspices of the
Society of St Vincent de Paul) in 1851. Ann died 21 Jan 1849 aged 39 at Herbert
House and was buried at Glasnevin. William died 1 Jul 1852 at Strasbourg.
1 Anna Maria M’Cann eldest daughter married John Maguire in June 1853.
John was with the 60th Rifles and the eldest son of Richard Maguire of
Newgrange.
2 William M’Cann of Balfestown, Co Meath married Maryanne Rorke on
11 May 1859 at St Andrew’s, Westland Row. Maryanne was the eldest
daughter of the late Peter C Rorke and his wife Mary of Nangor Castle,
Clondalkin, Co Dublin. William was the nephew of James McCann (Late
High Sheriff and Member for Drogheda and of Staleen House).
3 Rose McCann born circa 1842 became a sister of Mercy (Sister
Philomena) and died at Newtownforbes from Typhoid on 2 Jan 1886.
4 Mary M’Cann youngest daughter born circa 1840 died a spinster at 2
Rathmines Park on 25 Aug 1899 and was buried at Glasnevin.
5 Matthew M’Cann born circa 1842 married his cousin Minnie M’Cann of
Staleen House on 11 May 1865 at Donore Church. Minnie was the
daughter of James M’Cann, MP for Drogheda. Matthew was a grazier and
farmer and they were living at Caulstown Meath in 1901. Minnie died
23 Jan 1903 at Caulstown.
Matthew secondly married Margaret Gernon in 17 Jul 1907 at University
Church. Margaret was the daughter of Henry Chester Gernon and was
25 years his junior. They had at least four children. Matthew died
17 Feb 1916 at Charlemont Hospital late of Dowth.
