Charles born circa 1840, son of James Mayhead, a farm labourer. He was in the Royal artillery and
based at Portobello Barracks when he married Mary Cushall at St Mary’s Church on 26 Dec 1871.
Mary was the daughter of Edward Merna, a sailor and Mary Higgins. She was a servant and the widow
of William Cushall*. Witnesses: James Merna and Sarah Haddock. By 1873 Charles is described as a
blacksmith or labourer. In later years, when his daughters married, he was described as a coach
builder. Charles was admitted to Hospital (SDU Workhouse) and died there on 4 Jan 1887 late of
Chancery Lane. Margaret worked as a dealer and died at the Richmond District Lunatic Asylum on
6 Jan 1913. It is thought that they are buried at St Kevin’s as they were one of the few families with
burial rights after the graveyard closed in 1884.
1 Julia Mary Mayhead born 1 Sep 1873 at 2 Little Strand Street married Joseph Carter on
31 Jan 1893 at St Werburgh C of I Church. Julia and her family identified as Roman Catholic
in 1911. Julia died a widow at Dr Steeven’s Hospital late of 12 Golden Lane, off Bride Street on
30 Jan 1935.

2 Cecelia Mayhead born 20 Sep 1875 at the Rotunda Hospital married Henry Hayward on
13 Dec 1893 at St Werburgh C of I Church. Harry was a private in the Rifle Brigade and was
resident at Portobello Barracks. He was the son of Thomas Hayward, a baker. She was a
widow living with her mother at Ship Street in 1901.

Cecelia secondly married John Johnston, a carpenter of Dominic Street on 31 Aug 1905 at St
Werburgh C of I Church.

3 Anne Margaret Mayhead born 9 May 1878 at the Rotunda Hospital died 22 Dec 1879 at
Great Ship Street.
4 Sarah Mayhead (twin) born 20 Dec 1880 at the Rotunda Hospital died from measles on
18 Mar 1885 at Cork Street Hospital.
5 Frances Mayhead (twin) born 20 Dec 1880 in Co Dublin. She was a dressmaker in 1901 and
was housekeeper at the rectory in 1911 and 1912. She married James Richard Kilbey at
Stillorgan Parish Church on 19 Jun 1912. She was married by Rev Kennedy, her employer.
James was a piano tuner of Lennox Street, the son of Octavius Kilbey, piano tuner and Ada
Hayes. Frances died 8 Jul 1955 at St Kevin’s Hospital late of 41 Cashel Road, Crumlin. Her
funeral service was held at St Mary's C of I in Crumlin and she was laid to rest at Mount
Jerome. James died at St Kevin’s Hospital on 24 Dec 1960 late of Cashel Road.
1 Ada Ellen Kilbey born 1 Nov 1913 at 232 K Block Iveagh Buildings attended St
Peter’s School from 1922 to 1930. Ada died at Baggot street Hospital late of 41
Cashel Road on 1967.
2 Charles James Kilbey born 7 Sep 1917 at 232 K Block Iveagh Buildings went to
school in Stillorgan before moving to St Peter Boy’s school in 1926. He was a clerk
at CIE. He married Sarah Lillian (Sadie) Bibby, a widow and daughter of Henry Bibby
on 12 Oct 1940. Charles died 3 Mar 1956 at Cashel Road.
3 Patricia Cecelia (Patsy) Kilbey born 27 Feb 1919 at 232 K Block Iveagh Buildings, a
witness at her brother’s wedding in 1940. She married in 1948.
4 Frances (Fanny) Kilbey born 26 Dec 1921 in Dublin married in 1947.
