Maunsell family of Landsend
Henry Maunsell, physician, son of Thomas Maunsell and Ann Murray , Fellow of the Royal Collage
of Surgeons in Ireland, started the Dublin Medical Press in 1839 and was authur of 'The Dublin
Practice of Midwifery'. He was the eldest of eight children of Thomas Maunsell and Anne Murray.
His father was general manager to the Grand Canal Company, and the family lived in James' Street
Harbour.

Thomas had a brother William and a sister Judith and was the son of Henry Maunsell, the grandson
of Anthony Maunsell and the great grandson of Thomas Maunsell.
1 Henry Maunsell born 3 Feb 1806 was educated at Dr Philips' School in St Stephens Green. In 1821
he was apprenticed to Dr Charles Johnson, and in 1827 became a Licentiate of the Royal College of
Surgeons of Ireland. His first post was as dispensary doctor to the district of Letterkenny, Co
Donegal where he worked until 1831. That year he graduated MD in the University of Glasgow and
also took the Fellowship of the RCSI. Returning to Dublin, he was appointed lecturer in midwifery at
the Park Street School and assistant accoucheur to the Wellesley Lying‐in Institution. He was also
appointed assistant physician to the Magdalen Asylum. In 1834 Maunsell published 'The Dublin
practice of midwifery', and the following year was elected to the chair of that discipline. Two years
later in 1836 he co‐published 'A practical treatise on the diseases of children'. He married Mary
Colhoun daughter of the late Charles Colhoun and Ann Ellison of Letterkenny on 21 Jan 1832 at Bath.
Mary died 6 Jun 1835 at York Street.

Henry secondly married Caroline Stevenson in September 1837. She was the daughter of the late
Lieut Stevenson and Caroline Poole of Hennet House. In 1849 he edited the papers of Lord
Cloncurry published as 'Personal Recollections of the Life & Times of Valentine - Lord Cloncurry.
In 1858 he bought the Dublin Evening Mail. Henry died 27 Sep 1879 age 73 at Greystones and was
buried at Stillorgan graveyard. Caroline Maunsell died 2 Mar 1886 age 71 at the Isle of Wight.

5 Isabella Maunsell born June 1841, died at Willow Lodge, Booterstown 22 Apr 1843.
6 Thomasina Maunsell, 4th daughter born 1847 died 20 Feb 1875 age 28.
7 Thomas Arthur Maunsell born circa 1849 died July 1867 age 18.
8 Henry Charles Maunsell, 2nd son born circa 1853 died 3 Jun 1865 at 10 Upper Fitzwilliam
Street.
9 James Poole Maunsell born circa 1855 married Christina (Mina), eldest daughter of David
Richard Pigot of Churchtown House 21 Oct 1885 at Taney. He was a journalist and editor
of the Daily Express newspaper. He died 9 Jan 1897 age 42 at the home of his father in law
at Churchtown and is buried at Taney.
