Maple Family of Kildare Street and Marino Park
Frederick Maple a Butler at Marlfield House son of John Maple a Farmer married Anne Byrne a
Ladies Maid daughter of John Byrne a Poultry packer in 1858. Witness: John Bagwell.
Frederick Maple ran the well known and high class Maples Hotel on Kildare Street. He was a
member of the South Dublin Board of Guardians and a Commissioner of the Blackrock Township.
He was a Justice of the Peace for Dublin. He was on the Select Vestry of St Andrew's Church from
1875 and Churchwarden in 1883. The hotel was a very fashionable venue and played host to
many a society wedding. Frederick Maple died in 1906 and his daughter Charlotte took over the
hotel but its heyday was over.
During The Emergency it offered moderate rooms on a weekly basis and special terms for officers
and families. The contents were put up for sale, due to the hotel being requisitioned by His
Majesty's Government in 1917 and it was used during the war period as offices of the Irish
Recruiting Council and the Dublin Area Revision of Pensions Board before being used as the
offices of The Reconstruction & Demobilisation Board.
Maples Hotel was devastated by fire in February 1919 with the records of these war departments
destroyed in the blaze.
